Dacia Sandero Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very cheap to buy	Modest safety standards
Roomy and practical cabin	Stingy list of standard kit
Affordable to fuel and insure	Basic fit and finish

Quick Summary

The Dacia Sandero is Europe's best-selling retail car, and for good reason. It offers supermini space and practicality at city car prices, with a roomy cabin that comfortably seats five and a generous boot. The latest generation, based on the modern Renault Clio platform, has improved significantly over its predecessor. It's better to drive, better built, and now available with genuine luxury equipment on higher trims. The sharp, modern styling replaces the previous car's goofy appearance, whilst running costs remain impressively low thanks to the efficient TCe 90 engine delivering over 53mpg with the manual gearbox.

The 2026 facelift brought substantial upgrades to the top-spec Journey model, including heated seats, a heated steering wheel, multi-view camera, digital driver display, and a modular boot floor. Even base Essential and Expression models benefit from improved interior finishes. Residual values are exceptional, retaining up to 57% after three years. Whilst safety standards aren't class-leading and the driving experience lacks refinement, the Sandero delivers outstanding value for money. It's an honest, practical car that prioritises space and affordability over premium feel or dynamic handling.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum space and practicality, families needing a no-nonsense workhorse, and those prioritising value retention and low running costs.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium badge appeal, refined driving dynamics, comprehensive safety features, or high-quality interior materials.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sandero if: You're on a tight budget, need maximum space and practicality, seek low running costs, or prioritise value retention and affordability over premium features.

Consider alternatives if: You require class-leading safety features, premium interior quality, refined driving dynamics, or a prestigious badge.

Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero is a standout value proposition in the budget city car segment. Whilst the Hyundai i10 offers superior expert ratings and the Kia Picanto provides better user satisfaction, the Sandero's exceptional affordability, spacious cabin, and outstanding residual values make it the smart choice for budget-conscious buyers. It delivers honest, practical motoring without compromise, offering more space than most rivals at a significantly lower price point. For those prioritising value above all else, the Sandero remains unbeatable.
