Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very cheap to buy	Modest safety standards
Roomy and practical cabin	Stingy list of standard kit
Affordable to fuel and insure	Basic fit and finish

Quick Summary

The Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) is a budget-focused supermini that prioritises value and practicality over premium features. Owned by Renault, it utilises proven technology to deliver straightforward, accessible motoring. The cabin is basic but functional, with hard plastics throughout, though a 2016 facelift added modest refinements. The Sandero excels in practicality, offering excellent rear headroom and legroom that surpasses rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo, plus a generous 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with seats folded).

Driving dynamics are modest, with the early 1.2-litre petrol engine best avoided in favour of the more modern 1.0-litre or turbocharged 0.9-litre options. The 1.5-litre diesel is solid for high-mileage drivers. Running costs are impressively low, with real-world fuel economy around 40-60mpg depending on engine choice, and competitive insurance groups. Entry-level Access models are spartan, but mid-spec Ambiance and top-spec Laureate trims offer better value, with the latter including cruise control, parking sensors, and satellite navigation. Trim levels were revised in 2018, with Ambiance becoming Essential and Laureate becoming Comfort, the latter gaining Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising practicality and low running costs, and drivers needing affordable, reliable transport without premium features.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking engaging driving dynamics, premium interior quality, or comprehensive standard equipment, or those requiring the latest safety technology.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sandero if: You're on a tight budget, seeking practical and affordable transport, or prioritising low running costs and reliability over premium features.

Consider alternatives if: You value engaging driving dynamics, premium interior quality, comprehensive standard equipment, or the latest safety technology.

Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) occupies a unique position in the used supermini market as the most affordable option. Whilst the Skoda Fabia offers greater practicality and the Kia Rio provides a stronger reputation for quality, the Sandero's unbeatable price point and low running costs make it compelling for budget-conscious buyers. It may lack the refinement and driving engagement of pricier rivals, but it delivers honest, reliable transport with surprising spaciousness. For those prioritising value above all else, the Sandero remains a sensible choice.
