Good value for sure, however aircon could brew more efficient.

Basic but a nice drive. Plenty of pull despite the 0.9 litre engine.

Road handling was excellent and responded excellent when applying brakes on the Motorways. It did extremely good on fuel - petrol and it really was a pleasure to drive it!

Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very cheap to buy | Modest safety standards |
| Roomy and practical cabin | Stingy list of standard kit |
| Affordable to fuel and insure | Basic fit and finish |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) is a budget supermini that prioritises value and practicality over premium features. Built on proven Renault technology, it offers straightforward, accessible motoring without unnecessary frills. The cabin is basic but functional, with hard plastics throughout, though a 2016 facelift added modest refinements. The rear provides excellent head and legroom, surpassing rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo, whilst the 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with seats folded) is competitive in its class.
Engine options include a 1.2-litre petrol (best avoided), a turbocharged 0.9-litre petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel, with a modern 1.0-litre petrol introduced later. The 0.9-litre turbo offers the best balance of performance and efficiency. Running costs are low, with diesel models achieving around 60mpg and petrol variants around 40-44mpg in real-world driving. Tax and insurance groups are reasonable, and servicing is straightforward with 12,000-mile intervals. Whilst not as engaging to drive as the Ford Fiesta or as practical as the Skoda Fabia, the Sandero's exceptional affordability makes it an honest choice for budget-conscious buyers.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising practicality and low running costs, and drivers seeking straightforward, no-nonsense transport.
Not ideal for: Those seeking premium badge appeal, engaging driving dynamics, or comprehensive standard equipment and safety features.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 37.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Kia Rio | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 35.8% | 4.1/5 |
| Renault Clio | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 37.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Fabia | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.3% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero if: You're on a tight budget, prioritising practicality and low running costs, and seeking straightforward, no-nonsense transport without premium frills.
Consider alternatives if: You value engaging driving dynamics, comprehensive standard equipment, premium safety features, or superior build quality and reliability reputation.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero (2013-2020) occupies a unique position in the used supermini market as the most affordable option. Whilst rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Seat Ibiza offer more engaging driving experiences, the Skoda Fabia provides greater practicality, and the Kia Rio and Renault Clio boast stronger reputations for quality, the Sandero's exceptional value proposition is unmatched. For budget-conscious buyers willing to accept basic fit and finish in exchange for low purchase and running costs, the Sandero delivers honest, reliable transport that performs adequately and offers surprising spaciousness. It's not the most refined or feature-rich supermini, but it represents genuine value for money.
