Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged good looks | Basic and unsophisticated driving experience |
| Practical interior and roomy boot | Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active |
| Low running costs | Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a budget-friendly crossover that delivers SUV styling without the premium price tag. Built on the Sandero supermini platform, it features a raised ride height, rugged body cladding, and roof rails that transform its appearance into something far more adventurous. Whilst it lacks four-wheel drive and genuine off-road capability, the Stepway's SUV-like looks clearly resonate with buyers, accounting for around 70% of all Sandero sales. The 320-litre boot expands to 1,200 litres with rear seats folded, offering excellent practicality for its class.
Running costs are impressively low, with the 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering around 45mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 1.5-litre diesel achieves approximately 50mpg. The interior, though built down to a price with hard plastics, is sensibly laid out with decent storage. A mid-life refresh in 2016 added chrome accents and improved equipment, whilst later models introduced a 1.0-litre petrol option and the Blue dCi 95 diesel. The Stepway represents exceptional value for money, offering rugged styling, reliability, and affordability without compromise.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking SUV styling, families wanting practical and affordable transport, and those prioritising low running costs over driving refinement.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting engaging handling, premium interior quality, genuine off-road capability, or the sophistication of rivals like the Ford Fiesta Active or Seat Arona.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero Stepway | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Fiesta Active | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.0% | 4.1/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 27.0% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a tight budget, seeking SUV styling without premium pricing, wanting practical family transport, or prioritising low running costs over driving refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, premium interior quality, genuine off-road capability, or the sophistication of rivals like the Ford Fiesta Active or Seat Arona.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) stands out as the most affordable entry point to crossover ownership, offering exceptional value for money. Whilst the Ford Fiesta Active provides superior driving dynamics and the Hyundai i10 boasts higher expert ratings, the Stepway's combination of rugged styling, practicality, and low running costs makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Suzuki Ignis offers similar appeal but at a higher purchase price. For those willing to accept a more basic driving experience in exchange for genuine savings, the Stepway delivers outstanding value and reliability.
