Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged good looks | Basic and unsophisticated driving experience |
| Practical interior and roomy boot | Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active |
| Low running costs | Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a budget-friendly crossover that delivers SUV styling without the premium price tag. Built on the Sandero supermini platform, it features a raised ride height, rugged body cladding, and roof rails that transform its appearance into something far more adventurous. Whilst it lacks genuine off-road capability—there's no four-wheel drive—the Stepway's SUV-like looks clearly resonate with buyers, accounting for around 70% of all Sandero sales. The interior remains practical with a 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with seats folded), though the hard plastics and basic switchgear reflect its budget positioning.
The Stepway offers a straightforward driving experience with consistent handling and comfortable suspension, though it won't match the Ford Fiesta Active for refinement. Engine options include a 0.9-litre turbo petrol (TCe 90) delivering respectable mid-range performance at around 45mpg, a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol for basic models, and a 1.5-litre diesel (dCi 90) achieving approximately 50mpg. Running costs are impressively low, with affordable insurance, straightforward servicing at 12,000-mile intervals, and competitive tax rates for diesel models. As a used purchase, the Stepway represents exceptional value for budget-conscious buyers seeking practical, rugged-looking transport.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers wanting SUV styling, families seeking practical and affordable transport, and those prioritising low running costs over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium refinement, engaging handling comparable to the Ford Fiesta Active, or genuine off-road capability with four-wheel drive.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero Stepway | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 40.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Fiesta Active | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 39.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 43.8% | 4.1/5 |
| Hyundai i10 Active | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 36.1% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a tight budget, seeking SUV styling without premium pricing, or prioritising practical, affordable transport with low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You value premium refinement, engaging driving dynamics comparable to the Ford Fiesta Active, or require genuine four-wheel drive capability.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is an excellent value proposition in the budget crossover segment. Whilst it lacks the driving refinement of the Ford Fiesta Active and the all-round sophistication of the Hyundai i10 Active, its combination of rugged styling, practicality, and affordability makes it highly appealing to budget-conscious buyers. The Suzuki Ignis offers similar value, but the Stepway's larger boot and more spacious interior give it an edge for families. As a used purchase, the Stepway delivers impressive value for money, making it an intelligent choice for those prioritising economy and practicality over premium feel.
