Fiat 500 Hybrid Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable ride | Awkward pedal position |
| Feels special throughout | Cramped in the back |
| Easy to drive | Engine runs out of puff quickly |
Quick Summary
The Fiat 500 Hybrid is a stylish city car that prioritises character and charm over practicality. Fiat has adapted its electric 500 platform to accommodate a modest 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance, delivering just 64bhp. Whilst this results in leisurely performance (0-62mph in 16.2 seconds), the 500 excels in urban environments with its eager low-end response, silky gearshift, and sophisticated ride comfort. The cabin features a well-designed touchscreen, body-coloured dashboard accents, and useful physical controls, though the 183-litre boot is amongst the smallest available.
The 500 Hybrid is best suited to style-conscious buyers seeking a fun, characterful city runabout rather than a practical family workhorse. Real-world fuel economy of 40-45mpg is respectable but doesn't justify its premium pricing compared to rivals like the Kia Picanto or Renault Clio. Running costs are reasonable, with servicing required every 9,000 miles or annually. The car's high-mounted driving position and narrow rear doors may frustrate some, whilst the underpowered engine struggles beyond urban speeds. However, for young, single drivers or couples prioritising style and enjoyment over versatility, the 500 delivers Italian flair at an accessible price point.
Best for: Style-conscious urban drivers, young professionals seeking a characterful city car, and those prioritising fun and personality over practicality.
Not ideal for: Families needing boot space, drivers covering high mileages, those requiring motorway capability, or buyers seeking value-for-money compared to larger rivals.

| Fiat 500 Hybrid | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 44.3% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the 500 Hybrid if: You're a style-conscious urban driver seeking a characterful city car, a young professional prioritising fun and personality, or someone who values Italian flair and comfort over practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You need substantial boot space, plan to cover high mileages, require strong motorway performance, or seek better value-for-money compared to larger rivals.
Competitive Position: The Fiat 500 Hybrid occupies a unique position in the city car market, trading practicality for style and character. Whilst the Hyundai i10 offers superior expert ratings and the Renault Clio provides more space and capability, the 500 Hybrid delivers an unmatched sense of personality and Italian design heritage. Its comfortable ride, easy driving manner, and premium feel justify its higher price for style-conscious buyers, though pragmatic shoppers may find better value elsewhere. The 500 Hybrid is best appreciated as a lifestyle choice rather than a purely rational purchase.

The Fiat 500 is widely appreciated for its stylish design, compact size, and ease of maneuverability, making it a great option for urban driving. Owners often highlight its fun driving experience, economic fuel usage, and low costs for insurance and taxes. However, there are some concerns, particularly regarding comfort, as a few drivers mentioned seating issues in specific models. Overall, it presents excellent value for those seeking a reliable and eye-catching small car.

What people say
I LOVE the Fiat 500, Im on my fourth, soon to be 5th but the seats in the Dolcevita are AWFUL, I just cant get comfortable in them at all so will have to go for a 1.0 or Lounge again.
Good value. Exceptionally clean car with built in satnav. Would have loved all leather seats instead of partial leather.
Great ‘ this will be my second 500 I love how nippy they are, easy to drive and park. Economical on fuel, tax and insurance as a work run around it fits the bill perfectly.
2011 Fiat 500 lounge is a great little car... If you find one that's been looked after properly, then you will not be disapointed. Little features like start stop, bluetooth connectivity makes the car feel up to date. An affordable car that is at home in the city, great if you don't need large amounts of cabin space. My only dislike was the steering wheel... which was hard and smooth, making it feel like It could slip through my fingers.... I was worried that I would lose my grip on it if I didn't grasp it extra tightly. A steering wheel cover of some kind would add some much needed texture to aid grip & level of comfort.
Exceptional little car which offers all required for a reliable drive with style. All at a price which doesn’t break the bank.
