Fiat 500L (2013-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Versatile and practical cabin	Basic standard of finish
Available with five or seven seats	Poor real-world economy of TwinAir models
Cheap used car prices	Not at all sporty to drive

Quick Summary

The Fiat 500L (2013-present) is a versatile and practical compact MPV that offers surprising interior space despite its modest external dimensions. Available in standard five-seat and stretched seven-seat MPW configurations, it provides ample headroom and legroom, with flexible seating arrangements and generous boot capacity. The cabin features cheerful, wipe-clean plastics and straightforward controls, making it ideal for families. The 500L earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and comes well-equipped with modern connectivity options on higher trims, including optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The driving experience is comfortable rather than sporty, with soft suspension that absorbs bumps effectively. Engine options range from the economical 1.3-litre Multijet diesel (achieving up to 70.6mpg) to the smooth 1.4-litre petrol units, though the TwinAir engine disappoints on real-world fuel economy. Weak residual values make the 500L an affordable used purchase, particularly in higher-spec models with impressive equipment. The Cross and Trekking variants offer elevated ground clearance for light off-road capability, adding to the model's versatility.

Best for: Families seeking practical, affordable MPV space, buyers wanting five or seven-seat flexibility, and those prioritising comfort and versatility over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium cabin materials, sporty handling, or excellent residual values, or those considering TwinAir petrol engines for fuel economy.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 500L if: You need practical, affordable MPV space, want five or seven-seat flexibility, or prioritise comfort and versatility over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You seek premium cabin materials, sporty handling, excellent residual values, or superior real-world fuel economy across all engine options.

Competitive Position: The Fiat 500L is a strong contender in the compact MPV segment, offering excellent practicality and affordability. Whilst the Ford B-Max scores higher for expert rating and the Citroën C3 Picasso edges ahead on user satisfaction, the 500L's combination of versatile seating, generous space, and low used prices makes it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious families. Its seven-seat option and Cross/Trekking variants provide additional appeal, though buyers should avoid TwinAir engines and expect basic cabin materials. The 500L represents genuine value in the affordable MPV market.
