Fiat 500L (2013-present) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Versatile and practical cabin Basic standard of finish
Available with five or seven seats Poor real-world economy of TwinAir models
Cheap used car prices Not at all sporty to drive

Quick Summary

The Fiat 500L (2013-present) is a versatile and practical compact MPV that offers surprising interior space despite its modest external dimensions. With an upright cabin design, generous headroom and legroom in the front, and large side windows, it provides an airy feel. The standard 500L offers around average boot space for an MPV, whilst the stretched MPW version seats seven and combines generous interior space with a manageable external footprint ideal for city driving. The cabin features cheerful, wipe-clean plastics with chunky switches and dials, making it practical for families, though some may find the materials basic.

The 500L delivers a comfortable, cushy ride with soft springs and long-travel suspension that absorbs bumps effectively. Steering is light but slow, helping reduce body roll and keeping passengers comfortable. Engine options vary significantly in efficiency; whilst the TwinAir unit struggles when loaded, the 1.4-litre petrol engines are smoother and more economical, and the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel is exceptionally efficient, claiming up to 70.6mpg. The car achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating with six airbags and comprehensive safety systems. As a used buy, the 500L represents excellent value, with weak residual values making low-mileage examples affordable. Higher-spec models offer impressive equipment including optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking versatile, practical space, those wanting five or seven-seat options, and buyers looking for affordable, comfortable MPVs with low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling, those seeking premium interior materials, or buyers considering TwinAir models for fuel economy.

The Verdict

You should buy the 500L if: You're on a budget, seeking versatile and practical space for families, wanting five or seven-seat options, or looking for affordable, comfortable MPVs with low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling, premium interior materials, or require excellent real-world fuel economy across all engine options.

Competitive Position: The Fiat 500L (2013-present) is a strong contender in the compact MPV market, offering exceptional versatility and practicality at bargain prices. Whilst it may not match the Ford B-Max for expert rating or the Citroën C3 Picasso for value deals, its flexible seating arrangements, spacious cabin, and affordability make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious families. The weak residual values work in the buyer's favour, making low-mileage examples readily available at attractive prices. Choose the right engine—particularly the efficient 1.3-litre Multijet diesel—and you'll enjoy comfortable, economical family motoring.

If you want a lot of car for not a lot of money then look no further! We have 2 of these (we love them so much). Firstly the engine; a 1.6 multi jet diesel with fantastic punch, smooth execution and pretty quiet on the ears too! Both ours are ‘Lounge’ spec so they’re well equipped too. We have both the standard 500L and the MPW.. both are spacious and comfortable (though I do miss an arm rest on the driver’s seat, considering this is the highest model and that technically, they’re MPVs I’d have expected an arm rest. In the 500L you get parking sensors, multimedia touch screen player with USB connectors and Bluetooth, electric windows & door mirrors, hill start and ABS, city steering , tyre pressure monitors, stop start and a full pan glass roof. The MPW is virtually the same but the roof is upgraded to a glass sunroof (both models have an electric blind). The MPW also has 2 extra seats that fold in the boot (suitable for kids up to about 8 years old and that’s about it!).. the boot space is however, cavernous! Plenty of power in these cars, we even pull our folding camper with the MPW). Highly recommended!

I like that it looks different to other similar cars but read that the automatic gear is not very good so put me off.
