Fiat 500X (2014-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Distinctive looks	Not the roomiest or most practical compact SUV
Much improved drive from 2018 onwards	Older examples are starting to feel their age
Lots of scope for personalisation	Shorter new car warranty than some rivals

Quick Summary

The Fiat 500X (2014-present) is a retro-styled compact SUV that offers distinctive charm and practical appeal. Introduced to the UK market in 2015, it shares its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade and provides a stylish alternative to mainstream rivals like the VW T-Roc and Ford Puma. Standard equipment has always been generous, with even base models featuring air conditioning, cruise control and remote central locking. A major update in late 2018 introduced new engines, a dual-clutch transmission option, and improved styling and technology, bringing the 500X back on par with its competitors.

The 500X offers comfortable space for four adults with a 350-litre boot that can be extended by folding the 60/40 split seats. Running costs are reasonable, with early 1.6-litre petrol models averaging around 44mpg and the newer 1.5-litre mild hybrid achieving similar figures. Servicing costs are modest, and depreciation is less severe on used examples. However, it's not the most practical compact SUV, and rivals offer better handling and more modern technology. The 500X is best suited to buyers who value its distinctive retro styling and don't mind compromising on practicality and driving dynamics.

Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling, those wanting a fuss-free compact SUV with decent standard equipment, and drivers who appreciate personalisation options.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum practicality, superior handling, or the latest technology, or buyers wanting the best resale value compared to mainstream rivals.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 500X if: You value distinctive styling, seek a fuss-free compact SUV with decent standard equipment, or appreciate personalisation options.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum practicality, superior handling, the latest technology, or the best resale value compared to mainstream rivals.

Competitive Position: The Fiat 500X is an interesting option in the competitive compact SUV market, particularly if you opt for one of the later updated variants from 2018 onwards. However, it faces stiff competition from more highly regarded alternatives. The Seat Arona offers better handling and build quality, whilst the Nissan Juke provides better value and stronger user ratings. The Jeep Renegade, sharing the same platform, offers similar appeal with slightly better user satisfaction. For buyers seeking something with more comfort, better driving dynamics and perkier performance, the Volkswagen Audi Group offerings are superior. The 500X's distinctive retro charm and practical nature make it an interesting choice, but you must love its looks and feel to justify prioritising it over more capable rivals. Seeking a discounted model will help offset higher depreciation compared to better-regarded competitors.
