Fiat 500X (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive looks | Not the roomiest or most practical compact SUV |
| Much improved drive from 2018 onwards | Older examples are starting to feel their age |
| Lots of scope for personalisation | Shorter new car warranty than some rivals |
Quick Summary
The Fiat 500X (2014-present) is a retro-styled compact SUV that offers distinctive charm and practical appeal. Introduced to the UK market in 2015, it shares its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade and provides a stylish alternative to rivals such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Skoda Yeti. A wide variety of versions have been offered, including petrol and diesel all-wheel-drive models with automatic or manual transmissions. Standard equipment has always been decent, with the base Pop model featuring air conditioning, cruise control, remote central locking and electric windows. The 500X handles fairly neatly, though there is noticeable body roll and vague steering. A 350-litre boot accommodates buggies and suitcases, with 60/40 split seats folding almost completely flat.
A major update in late 2018 considerably boosted its appeal with new engines, dual-clutch transmission options, and improved styling and technology. The 1.0-litre engine achieves a 10.9-second 0-62mph time, whilst the 1.5-litre mild hybrid cuts that to 9.4 seconds. Running costs are reasonable, with early 1.6-litre petrol models claiming 44.1mpg and emitting 147g/km of CO2. The facelifted 1.5-litre mild hybrid is more efficient. Front-wheel-drive versions cost less to run than all-wheel-drive alternatives. Depreciation may be higher than some rivals, so buying a used example a few years old offers better value. The 500X suits buyers seeking distinctive styling and practical, fuss-free motoring, though rivals offer more comfort, better handling and perkier performance.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive retro styling, practical compact SUV space, and personalisation options; those preferring the updated 2018+ models with improved technology and driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space and practicality, buyers wanting the latest technology and safety features, or drivers seeking the finest handling and performance in the compact SUV class.

The Verdict
You should buy the 500X if: You seek distinctive retro styling, practical compact SUV space, and personalisation options; you prefer the updated 2018+ models with improved technology and driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space and practicality, want the latest technology and safety features, or seek the finest handling and performance in the compact SUV class.
Competitive Position: The Fiat 500X is an interesting option in the competitive compact SUV market, offering distinctive looks and practical, fuss-free motoring. Whilst rivals such as the Seat Arona offer better handling, more comfort and perkier performance, the 500X's retro charm and scope for personalisation appeal to buyers seeking something different. The later updated variants from 2018 onwards are considerably more desirable than earlier examples, which are starting to feel their age. Depreciation may be higher than some rivals, making used examples better value. The Jeep Renegade shares the same platform but offers more off-road capability, whilst the Nissan Juke provides a similarly distinctive alternative. For those still interested in a new 500X, seeking a discounted model will help justify the purchase and offset higher depreciation compared to better-regarded rivals.

5 Overall rating
(3 reviews)They’re great little SUVs although much more space inside than you’d expect. Perky petrol engines and economical diesels, a joy to drive.
Great car! So much more powerful and responsive than the Fiat 500 Pop. Its missing a CD player (Im aging myself) and heated seats, but otherwise fantastic car!
fully equipped and easy to get in and out of if you are getting, but also has street cred
