They’re great little SUVs although much more space inside than you’d expect. Perky petrol engines and economical diesels, a joy to drive.

Great car! So much more powerful and responsive than the Fiat 500 Pop. Its missing a CD player (Im aging myself) and heated seats, but otherwise fantastic car!

Fiat 500X (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive looks | Not the roomiest or most practical compact SUV |
| Much improved drive from 2018 onwards | Older examples are starting to feel their age |
| Lots of scope for personalisation | Shorter new car warranty than some rivals |
Quick Summary
The Fiat 500X (2014-present) is a retro-styled compact SUV that offers distinctive charm and practical appeal. Introduced to the UK market in 2015, it shares its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade and provides a stylish alternative to rivals such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Skoda Yeti. Standard equipment has always been generous, with features like air conditioning, cruise control and remote central locking included across the range. A major update in late 2018 significantly boosted its appeal with new engines, a dual-clutch transmission option, improved styling and modern technology that brought it back on par with competitors.
The 500X comfortably seats four adults with various storage bins throughout its stylishly-appointed interior. Its 350-litre boot is smaller than many rivals but adequate for buggies and suitcases, with 60/40 split seats that fold almost flat. Running costs are reasonable, with early 1.6-litre petrol models averaging around 44mpg and the newer 1.5-litre mild hybrid achieving similar efficiency. The 2018 facelift introduced standard safety features including traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assistance and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support. Whilst the 500X handles fairly neatly, it lacks the refined driving experience of rivals like the Seat Arona and Volkswagen T-Roc. However, its affordable pricing and distinctive character make it an interesting proposition, particularly for later updated variants.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and practical, fuss-free motoring, those looking for personalisation options, and budget-conscious shoppers considering used examples from 2018 onwards.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space, the finest handling dynamics, or high annual mileages requiring motorway comfort, or buyers wanting premium badge appeal.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat 500X | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.2% | 4.1/5 |
| Seat Arona | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 37.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Jeep Renegade | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 35.3% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 500X if: You seek distinctive styling and practical motoring, enjoy personalisation options, or are a budget-conscious buyer considering used examples from 2018 onwards.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, the finest handling dynamics, high annual mileages, or premium badge appeal.
Competitive Position: The Fiat 500X (2014-present) is an interesting option in the competitive compact SUV market, particularly for those valuing distinctive looks and fuss-free practicality. Whilst it may not match rivals like the Seat Arona for refined driving or the Nissan Juke for overall appeal, its affordable pricing, generous standard equipment and scope for personalisation make it an attractive choice. Later updated variants from 2018 onwards represent better value, as earlier examples are beginning to feel dated. The 500X's distinctive character and reasonable running costs justify consideration, especially when purchased at a discount to offset higher depreciation compared to better-regarded competitors.
