Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Affordable to buy and cheap to run	Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals
4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers	The Panda isn't very well equipped
Cute and distinctive looks	Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta

Quick Summary

The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical and inexpensive runabout that competes with city cars such as the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Up. Now in its third generation, the Panda is honest, unpretentious, and characterful, offering surprising practicality for its size. With generous interior space, a flexible boot system with sliding rear seats, and a 60/40 split fold-down rear, it provides excellent versatility. The current generation offers a 1-litre 69bhp mild hybrid engine, whilst the used market provides varied options including the appealing 0.9-litre Twinair and 1.3-litre diesel variants.

However, the Panda has significant safety concerns, scoring zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018 and earning only 17% for child occupancy safety—far below rivals like the Volkswagen Up. The car is starting to show its age with basic equipment levels and some models lacking Bluetooth audio streaming. Running costs are low, with typical fuel economy around 50mpg for the 1.2-litre petrol and excellent value for money. The 4x4 variants offer a rare all-wheel-drive option in the city car segment, appealing to those needing off-road capability on a budget.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, practical runabout, country-dwellers wanting 4x4 capability, and those prioritising low running costs over premium features.

Not ideal for: Families regularly carrying children, buyers prioritising modern safety features and equipment, or those seeking engaging driving dynamics comparable to a Ford Fiesta.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Panda if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a practical and affordable runabout, need 4x4 capability for country living, or prioritise low running costs over modern features.

Consider alternatives if: You regularly carry children, require modern safety features and equipment, or want engaging driving dynamics and premium build quality.

Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) remains an appealing choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking practicality and affordability. Whilst it lags behind rivals like the Volkswagen Up and Citroën C1 in safety ratings and equipment levels, its distinctive charm, low running costs, and unique 4x4 availability make it compelling for specific buyers. The Kia Picanto offers similar value with better equipment, whilst the Volkswagen Up provides superior safety credentials. However, for those prioritising affordability and the option of all-wheel-drive capability, the Panda remains a sensible and characterful choice.
