Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordable to buy and cheap to run | Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals |
| 4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers | The Panda isn't very well equipped |
| Cute and distinctive looks | Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta |
Quick Summary
The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical, inexpensive, and characterful city car. As a third-generation model, it offers generous interior space for its size, with room for three adults in the back and a surprisingly decent boot that can be extended by sliding the rear seats. While it may not be the quickest car, its ride is comfortable, handling is reassuring, and it's an easy car to drive, even on motorways, with commendably low noise levels.
A significant drawback is its safety rating, having scored zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018 (though it achieved four stars in 2011), particularly with a poor 17% for child occupancy safety. While new models feature a 1-litre mild hybrid engine, the used market offers more variety, including 1.2-litre petrol, 1.3-litre diesel, and 0.9-litre Twinair engines. Running costs are low, with good fuel economy and affordable maintenance, but some older models may lack modern tech like Bluetooth.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, those seeking a practical and characterful city car, country-dwellers (for used 4x4 versions), and buyers prioritising low running costs.
Not ideal for: Families prioritising safety (especially child safety), buyers wanting cutting-edge technology or premium finishes, or those seeking a dynamically engaging driving experience.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | 36.8% | 4.0/5 |
| Kia Picanto | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | 29.4% | 4.2/5 |

| Volkswagen Up | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Panda if: You're on a budget, seeking a practical and characterful city car, live in the countryside (for used 4x4 versions), or prioritise low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise safety (especially child safety), want cutting-edge technology or premium finishes, or desire a dynamically engaging driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) stands out in the city car segment for its distinct character, affordability, and surprising practicality for its size. While its 0-star Euro NCAP safety rating from 2018 is a significant concern, and it may lack the modern tech and dynamic flair of some rivals like the VW Up or Ford Fiesta, its low running costs and the unique appeal of its optional 4x4 versions (on the used market) make it a compelling choice for specific buyers looking for an honest, unpretentious, and budget-friendly vehicle.

4.1 Overall rating
(11 reviews)its a great little car every thing works, its great value for money and has no gimmicks, great car to drive . everything in the right place. and a car like this stands on its own,
A cracking little motor. Basic but for the price is just what I wanted. Has most of the toys one would like in a car. Just a couple missing. Sat nav. Dab. But for the price I can live without. Drives very well. Good mpg.
Slightly underpowered, it needs an overdrive. Also needs a better coating of paint. Otherwise not a bad little car.
The car has a decent specification for its age. It is comparable to small city cars like VW Up and Skoda Citigo
after 14 years still going strong NO FAILED MOTS !
