Ford B-Max (2012-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Lots of space inside for such a small car Iffy Powershift automatic gearbox
Sliding rear doors make getting in and out easy Some electrical issues
Fun to drive Not as fashionable as a small SUV

Quick Summary

The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) is a clever compact MPV that maximises space and practicality in a small package. Its standout feature is the innovative sliding rear doors with no B-pillar, creating a 150cm opening—double the typical width—making access exceptionally easy for child seats and passengers. Based on the Fiesta platform, it delivers surprising driving engagement with sharp steering, well-contained body roll, and a composed ride that handles bumps with executive-saloon refinement. The interior is smartly packaged with 318 litres of boot space expanding to 1,386 litres with seats folded, plus a rear-facing child mirror and 60/40 split-fold rear seats.

Engine options include efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrols (100-120hp) and 1.5-1.6-litre TDCi diesels, with real-world fuel economy around 40mpg for petrol and better for diesel. A slick five-speed manual is standard, with a six-speed Powershift automatic available on petrol models. Trim levels—Zetec, Titanium, and Titanium X—offer good equipment progression, whilst 2017 revisions added sat-nav across the range. Insurance groups are low (7-13), servicing is affordable, and residual values are strong at 41-47% after three years, making it an excellent used buy.

Best for: Families needing practicality in a compact car, parents with young children benefiting from easy rear access, and drivers seeking engaging handling combined with comfort and space.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the latest infotainment technology, those wanting the trendiness of a small SUV, or drivers requiring the Powershift automatic (which has reliability concerns).

The Verdict

You should buy the B-Max if: You need practicality in a compact car, have young children who benefit from easy rear access, or seek engaging handling combined with comfort and space.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the latest infotainment technology, want the trendiness of a small SUV, or require a reliable automatic gearbox.

Competitive Position: The Ford B-Max is the class leader among compact MPVs, outperforming rivals like the Nissan Note and Citroën C3 Picasso in driving dynamics and practicality. Its innovative sliding rear doors, spacious interior, and Fiesta-derived handling make it the standout choice for families seeking a versatile, engaging vehicle. Whilst the Honda Jazz offers comparable user ratings, the B-Max delivers superior driving engagement and unique accessibility features. As compact MPVs fade from fashion, a used B-Max remains the finest option in this bodystyle, offering exceptional value and practicality at an affordable price point.

Customers say

The Ford B-Max has received positive feedback from owners for its roomy interior, practical features like sliding doors, and strong performance. Many drivers appreciate the spacious leg room and thoughtful additions such as parking sensors and a reverse camera. However, some have raised concerns about the small appearance of the wheels and a blind spot created by the door design, particularly affecting visibility at junctions. There's a collective disappointment among fans that production ended in 2018, as many view this vehicle as a true gem.

It’s a lovely car. I have had 3 and am so sad that they stopped manufacturing them in 2018. I would love a newer model. The ecoboost makes it a really nippy car. The leg room in the back seats is very spacious. The sliding doors are ideal when parked between 2 cars and you have children in the back. It prevents them smacking the door into the other cars when opening them.

Being a Ford its Reliable . Good points. Cheap to run, quiet and pokey 1ltr turbo. No centre pillars in between the doors. Bad points. Wet belt, over a £1000 to replace, stupid idea. Needs chain drive and this engine would see over 200k miles easy. Leak in the boot and door panel is common. Would prefer a sunroof to the panoramic roof.

I absolutely love the Bmax.! The ecoboost is economical and very cheap to tax. As a blue badge holder I love the high driving position. The best feature by far is the back sliding doors, which are brilliant for small children, and the boot size is great. I would have given five stars but for the blind spot where the front and back doors meet - it can make watching for traffic coming from the right at a junction difficult to see if you are turning left and craning your neck to see past it. Such a shame production was stopped on this gem of a car.
