| Fun to drive | Not as fashionable as a small SUV |
Quick Summary
The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) is a clever compact MPV, primarily known for its innovative sliding rear doors and the absence of a B-pillar. This unique design creates an exceptionally wide 150cm aperture, making access to the rear seats remarkably easy for families, especially when dealing with child seats or transporting older passengers. Based on the Ford Fiesta platform, it offers a surprisingly engaging driving experience for its class, with well-contained body roll, precise steering, and a comfortable, refined ride. While its 318-litre boot space is smaller than some rivals, the B-Max compensates with versatile features like 60/40 split/fold rear seats, underfloor storage, a low load lip, and a folding front passenger seat that allows for items up to 2.34m long. Engine options include capable 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrols and economical TDCi diesels, providing good performance and impressive real-world fuel economy. Running costs are generally low, with affordable insurance and maintenance, making it an excellent value used car despite its relatively short production run due to the rise of small SUVs.
Best for: Families needing easy access to rear seats, drivers prioritising practicality and a fun-to-drive small car, and those looking for an affordable, economical used MPV.
Not ideal for: Buyers who prefer the aesthetics of an SUV, those needing maximum boot space, or individuals seeking the absolute latest in infotainment technology like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The Verdict
You should buy the B-Max if: You're a family needing easy access to rear seats, you prioritise practicality and a fun-to-drive small car, or you're looking for an affordable, economical used MPV.
Consider alternatives if: You prefer the aesthetics of an SUV, you need maximum boot space, or you're seeking the absolute latest in infotainment technology like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Competitive Position: The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) was a class leader among compact MPVs, primarily due to its ingenious sliding rear doors and B-pillarless design, offering unmatched accessibility for families. Its Fiesta-derived underpinnings provide a surprisingly enjoyable driving experience, setting it apart from many rivals. Despite its practicality and low running costs, its production was cut short by the rise of SUVs. As a used car, it remains an outstanding choice for those seeking a practical, engaging, and affordable family vehicle, outperforming contemporaries like the Nissan Note and Vauxhall Meriva in many respects.

4.4 Overall rating
(15 reviews)It’s a lovely car. I have had 3 and am so sad that they stopped manufacturing them in 2018. I would love a newer model. The ecoboost makes it a really nippy car. The leg room in the back seats is very spacious. The sliding doors are ideal when parked between 2 cars and you have children in the back. It prevents them smacking the door into the other cars when opening them.
Being a Ford its Reliable . Good points. Cheap to run, quiet and pokey 1ltr turbo. No centre pillars in between the doors. Bad points. Wet belt, over a £1000 to replace, stupid idea. Needs chain drive and this engine would see over 200k miles easy. Leak in the boot and door panel is common. Would prefer a sunroof to the panoramic roof.
I absolutely love the Bmax.! The ecoboost is economical and very cheap to tax. As a blue badge holder I love the high driving position. The best feature by far is the back sliding doors, which are brilliant for small children, and the boot size is great. I would have given five stars but for the blind spot where the front and back doors meet - it can make watching for traffic coming from the right at a junction difficult to see if you are turning left and craning your neck to see past it. Such a shame production was stopped on this gem of a car.
Ideal small SUV Titanium Model has all the extras one needs -easy to drive good gearbox and the 3 Cylinder Model has adequate acceleration-Mine Has Leather seats -Reverse Camera and Parking sensers- All in all brilliant small SUV
Very roomy like the sliding doors wheels seem small on such a size car
