Ford B-Max (2012-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Lots of space inside for such a small car Iffy Powershift automatic gearbox
Sliding rear doors make getting in and out easy Some electrical issues
Fun to drive Not as fashionable as a small SUV

Quick Summary

The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) is a clever compact MPV that maximises interior space and practicality in a small package. Its standout feature is the innovative sliding rear doors that create a 150cm opening—double the usual width—making access exceptionally easy for child seats and passengers. Based on the Ford Fiesta platform, the B-Max delivers surprising driving engagement with sharp steering, well-contained body roll, and a composed ride that handles bumps with executive-car refinement. The interior is smartly packaged with a rear-facing child mirror, 60/40 split-fold rear seats, and underfloor storage, though boot space of 318 litres is modest compared to rivals.

Engine options include efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrols (achieving around 40mpg in real-world driving), conventional 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrols, and economical 1.5 and 1.6-litre TDCi diesels (closer to 50mpg). A slick five-speed manual is standard, with a six-speed Powershift automatic available on petrol models. Insurance groups are low (7-13), and residual values are strong at 41-47% after three years. Servicing costs are affordable, with minor services around £179. As a used car, the B-Max represents excellent value for families seeking practicality and driving enjoyment in a compact form.

Best for: Families needing extra space without a large footprint, parents with young children (thanks to the sliding doors), and drivers seeking a practical yet engaging car to drive.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising boot space comparable to larger MPVs, those seeking the latest infotainment technology, or those wanting a fashionable small SUV.

The Verdict

You should buy the B-Max if: You're a family needing extra space without a large footprint, a parent with young children seeking easy access, or a driver wanting a practical yet engaging car to drive.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise boot space comparable to larger MPVs, require the latest infotainment technology, or want a fashionable small SUV.

Competitive Position: The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) is the class leader in the compact MPV segment, outshining rivals like the Nissan Note and Citroën C3 Picasso. Its innovative sliding rear doors, spacious interior, and engaging driving dynamics set it apart. Whilst the Honda Jazz offers similar practicality and the Citroën C3 Picasso provides excellent value with more good/great deals available, the B-Max combines superior driving enjoyment with family-friendly features. As compact MPVs have become automotive history, a used B-Max remains the best choice for those seeking practicality, affordability, and driving satisfaction in a small package.

Customers say

The Ford B-Max has received positive feedback from owners for its roomy interior, practical features like sliding doors, and strong performance. Many drivers appreciate the spacious leg room and thoughtful additions such as parking sensors and a reverse camera. However, some have raised concerns about the small appearance of the wheels and a blind spot created by the door design, particularly affecting visibility at junctions. There's a collective disappointment among fans that production ended in 2018, as many view this vehicle as a true gem.

It’s a lovely car. I have had 3 and am so sad that they stopped manufacturing them in 2018. I would love a newer model. The ecoboost makes it a really nippy car. The leg room in the back seats is very spacious. The sliding doors are ideal when parked between 2 cars and you have children in the back. It prevents them smacking the door into the other cars when opening them.

Being a Ford its Reliable . Good points. Cheap to run, quiet and pokey 1ltr turbo. No centre pillars in between the doors. Bad points. Wet belt, over a £1000 to replace, stupid idea. Needs chain drive and this engine would see over 200k miles easy. Leak in the boot and door panel is common. Would prefer a sunroof to the panoramic roof.

I absolutely love the Bmax.! The ecoboost is economical and very cheap to tax. As a blue badge holder I love the high driving position. The best feature by far is the back sliding doors, which are brilliant for small children, and the boot size is great. I would have given five stars but for the blind spot where the front and back doors meet - it can make watching for traffic coming from the right at a junction difficult to see if you are turning left and craning your neck to see past it. Such a shame production was stopped on this gem of a car.
