Ford C-Max (2011-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fun to drive for an MPV | Pre-facelift cars feel a bit cheap inside |
| Practical and roomy cabin | Models with an auto gearbox have worse fuel economy |
| Grand C-Max has room for seven and sliding doors | Not as many driver aids as some more modern MPVs |
Quick Summary
The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) is a compact MPV that combines practicality with engaging driving dynamics. This second-generation model features sharper styling than its predecessor and seats five in standard form, or seven in the Grand C-Max variant. With a 471-litre boot that expands to 1,851 litres with the rear seats folded, it offers excellent space for families. A 2015 facelift brought a reprofiled nose and enhanced infotainment with the SYNC3 system, making later models considerably more refined than earlier examples.
The C-Max excels where rivals like the Renault Scenic and Citroën C4 Picasso fall short: it's genuinely enjoyable to drive, with sharp steering and composed handling. Engine options range from efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrols to economical 1.5-litre diesels, with most models featuring a light and precise manual gearbox. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel variants achieving up to 74.3mpg. Service intervals are annual or every 12,500 miles, and insurance groups range from 10 to 26. As a used buy, the C-Max represents excellent value, particularly for families seeking an engaging MPV without sacrificing practicality.
Best for: Families needing practical transport with engaging driving dynamics, those seeking an MPV that's fun behind the wheel, and budget-conscious buyers looking for spacious seven-seat options (Grand C-Max).
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the latest driver assistance features, those wanting premium interior materials in pre-facelift models, or those requiring automatic transmissions with optimal fuel economy.

The Verdict
You should buy the C-Max if: You're a family seeking practical transport with engaging driving dynamics, looking for an MPV that's genuinely fun behind the wheel, or wanting a spacious seven-seat option (Grand C-Max) on a budget.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the latest driver assistance features, require premium interior materials throughout, or need an automatic transmission with optimal fuel economy.
Competitive Position: The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) stands out as the most engaging MPV in its class, offering a rare combination of practicality and driving enjoyment. Whilst the Citroën C4 Picasso boasts higher user ratings and more distinctive styling, and the Renault Scenic offers greater interior flexibility, neither matches the C-Max's fun factor or robust reliability. The C-Max represents exceptional value for families unwilling to compromise on driving pleasure, particularly when compared to more expensive rivals. Post-facelift models with SYNC3 infotainment are especially worthwhile, delivering a modern ownership experience at used-car prices.

(11 reviews)Customers say
The Ford C-MAX is widely appreciated for its spacious interior, comfortable driving experience, and economical fuel consumption. Drivers especially like the high seating position and versatile storage options, making it a great choice for families and those needing extra room. However, some owners find the lack of advanced features such as electric retractable mirrors and the absence of a spare tire to be drawbacks. Overall, the C-MAX is often seen as a value-packed option with a smooth ride.

What people say
My second For Max. Very smooth driving, economical, big boot capacity and ample legroom in the back. This version does not have electric retractable mirrors, which is disappointing, but has cruise control and climate. So you win some. Cant go into clean air zone.
I bought the Titanium version which has lots of extras, so am very pleased with my new car. 9 years old but good value as far as I'm concerned, well suited to my needs.
My second c-max great features and good value would buy again
I love the car, apparently over priced based on Motorway buying site but I'd save again if need to replace.
