Ford C-Max (2011-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fun to drive for an MPV	Pre-facelift cars feel a bit cheap inside
Practical and roomy cabin	Models with an auto gearbox have worse fuel economy
Grand C-Max has room for seven and sliding doors	Not as many driver aids as some more modern MPVs

Quick Summary

The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) is a compact MPV that combines practicality with engaging driving dynamics. This second-generation model offers sharp styling and seats five in standard form or seven in the Grand C-Max variant. With a 471-litre boot that expands to 1,851 litres with rear seats folded, it provides excellent space for families. A 2015 facelift brought a reprofiled nose and smarter interior with enhanced infotainment, making later models considerably more appealing than earlier versions.

The C-Max stands out for its fun-to-drive character, something rarely found in the MPV segment. It features a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, with the later 1.5-litre TDCi diesel delivering impressive economy of up to 74.3mpg. Running costs are reasonable, with servicing every 12,500 miles and insurance groups ranging from 10 to 26. Whilst rivals like the Citroën C4 Picasso offer more distinctive styling and flexibility, the Ford's robustness, reliability, and engaging driving experience make it an excellent all-rounder for families who refuse to sacrifice driving enjoyment.

Best for: Families seeking practicality without sacrificing driving enjoyment, those wanting an engaging MPV with strong engines, and buyers looking for excellent value in the used market.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior flexibility or distinctive styling, buyers wanting the latest driver assistance systems, or those preferring automatic transmissions for fuel efficiency.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C-Max if: You're seeking practicality without sacrificing driving enjoyment, want an engaging MPV with strong engines, or are looking for excellent value in the used market.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior flexibility, distinctive styling, the latest driver assistance systems, or prefer automatic transmissions for fuel efficiency.

Competitive Position: The Ford C-Max (2011-2019) is a standout in the MPV segment, offering an engaging driving experience that rivals cannot match. Whilst the Citroën C4 Picasso provides more distinctive styling and interior flexibility, and the Vauxhall Astra offers strong user ratings, the C-Max's combination of practicality, robustness, and driving enjoyment makes it an excellent all-rounder. For families refusing to compromise on driving dynamics, the C-Max represents outstanding value, particularly in the used market where prices remain competitive.
