The Ford Edge has garnered positive feedback for its comfort, especially with features like heated leather seats and a quality sound system. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior and overall performance. However, some have noted challenges with maneuvering, particularly due to its turning circle. Not sure why there aren't more of these on the road, 4wd, good size, economical, nice style and extremely comfortable.

On researching the ford edge I found it’s not got a very good full turning circle. I live in very winding lanes and need to turn around in the road slot so it won’t be for me. Shame because it looked very good from the advert

Reviewed a 2019 Ford Edge on 12 Oct 2023
Having run a 2016 Edge Titanium 2.0 auto with Luxury Pack (full leather, panoramic roof, heated/cooled seats, etc.,) for over 5 1/2 years, I wanted to update the model knowing that Ford stopped selling them in the U.K in 2019. The ST-Line model purchased is very similarly specified to the Titanium which means a high level - with additional ‘bells and whistles’ such as blind spot indicators, B&O sound system, front camera (in addition to rear reversing camera), different transmission, etc, etc; in other words, a lot of car for your money and comparable with cars carrying a premium badge. Styling has been upgraded with some real changes (improvements) to body styling with a grea5 paint finish. The Edge is a large car but handles well and relatively economical. I suspect the Eco-blue engine may not be as frugal as the ‘old’ TDi but it’s better for the environment. This model is still available in the U.S. -what a pity they’re not bringing them over here.

Ford Edge (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable for long-distance driving | Not as sharp to drive as most Fords |
| Very spacious cabin and boot | Earlier engines are less efficient than later units |
| Lots of kit as standard | Some reliability issues with dual-mass flywheels |
Quick Summary
The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is Ford's flagship SUV, offering more space and equipment than premium rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 at a significantly lower price point. Originally intended for the North American market, it was introduced to the UK in 2016 as a big, well-equipped, and comfortable family SUV. Despite a 2018 facelift featuring new headlamps, revised grille, and updated trim lines, the Edge struggled for sales success and was discontinued at the end of 2019, though new examples remained available in 2020.
The Edge excels as a refined long-distance cruiser with an exceptionally spacious cabin offering abundant accommodation for families. With 602 litres of boot space expanding to 1,688 litres with the rear seats folded, it provides exceptional practicality. All versions came well-equipped with dual-zone climate control, a 10-inch touchscreen, parking sensors, and rearview camera. Diesel engines are smooth and hushed, though the car's substantial mass means it lacks the driving dynamism of smaller Ford SUVs. If purchased at the right price point, the Edge represents excellent value, though rapid depreciation and the model's discontinuation should be considered.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped long-distance cruiser with commanding driving position and exceptional boot space, particularly those prioritising practicality over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking sharp handling or driving excitement, those concerned about resale value, or those requiring the latest technology and infotainment systems.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Edge | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 F25 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.4% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen Touareg | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.4% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Edge if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped long-distance cruiser with commanding driving position and exceptional practicality, particularly if purchased at the right price point.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling, driving excitement, premium badge appeal, or require the latest technology and infotainment systems.
Competitive Position: The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is a strong contender in the premium SUV market, offering exceptional space, comfort, and equipment at a lower price than German rivals. Whilst the BMW X3 F25 edges ahead on driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Touareg scores higher on user satisfaction, the Edge delivers superior practicality and value for money. Its main weakness is rapid depreciation and discontinuation from the UK market, which may concern buyers prioritising resale value. For families seeking a refined, spacious, and well-equipped family SUV without premium badge snobbery, the Edge remains an excellent choice.
