Ford Focus (2018-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Great to drive | Ford doesn’t make it anymore |
| Ample space for tall passengers | Some rivals have bigger boots |
| Excellent EcoBoost petrol engines | Entry-level cars don’t feel as dynamic |
Quick Summary
The Ford Focus (2018-2025), the fourth-generation family hatchback, maintained its reputation for class-leading handling, steering response, and a practical interior. While it grew in size, it remained a top choice for driving enthusiasts. It offers ample space for tall passengers, Isofix points, and a 375-litre boot (hatchback) or 635-litre (estate), comparable to a VW Golf. The model received a refresh in 2021, introducing mild-hybrid technology and significant tech upgrades like the 13.0-inch SYNC4 infotainment system.
With a wide range of turbocharged EcoBoost petrol and diesel engines, the Focus delivers a superb blend of comfort and control, making it enjoyable to drive. Running costs are competitive, with decent fuel economy across the range and all Mk4 versions being ULEZ-compliant. Resale values and insurance costs are strong, although servicing might be slightly higher than some rivals. Overall, the Focus is a sensible and engaging choice, offering good value and versatility before its retirement.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise an engaging driving experience, seek a practical family car with good interior space, value competitive running costs including ULEZ compliance, and appreciate advanced infotainment (especially post-facelift models).
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most distinctive exterior styling (e.g., Honda Civic), the absolute largest boot capacity (e.g., Skoda Octavia, Vauxhall Astra), or a flashier, more modern interior design (e.g., VW Golf).

The Verdict
You should buy the Focus if: You prioritise an engaging driving experience, seek a practical family car with good interior space, value competitive running costs including ULEZ compliance, or appreciate advanced infotainment.
Consider alternatives if: You seek the most distinctive exterior styling, the absolute largest boot capacity, or a flashier, more modern interior design.
Competitive Position: The Ford Focus (2018-2025) stands out in the family hatchback segment for its class-leading driving dynamics and well-balanced blend of comfort and control. It offers practical interior space, competitive running costs, and a strong safety record. While some rivals may offer more distinctive styling or larger boot capacities, the Focus remains a highly commendable choice for its engaging performance and overall versatility, particularly the potent ST models and the advanced technology of the post-facelift versions.

4.5 Overall rating
(91 reviews)The car was perfect for my needs to travel daily up and down the motorway to work, a 30 mile round trip. excellent value for money.
No 5 star rating due to most engines being fitted with wet timing belt. An absolutely disastrous idea in comparison to a chain. Unfortunately many manufacturers are starting to use wet belts, which inevitably will lead to expensive belt failures, and even simple replacements are expensive. In the case of the Focus a great car with in built fragility by Ford
Reliable, comfortable economical stylish, easy to work on. Need I say more
I brought a 2016 focus st3 good interior size nice features and really nice drive. Really nice sporty car and still good for family
Its a good car and is worth the money.
