Ford Focus (2018-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Great to drive | Ford doesn’t make it anymore |
| Ample space for tall passengers | Some rivals have bigger boots |
| Excellent EcoBoost petrol engines | Entry-level cars don’t feel as dynamic |
Quick Summary
The Ford Focus (2018-2025), the fourth-generation model, maintained its reputation for class-leading handling and steering response, making it a highly engaging car to drive. It offers a practical and well-finished interior with ample space for tall passengers, thanks to an extended wheelbase. The hatchback provides a 375-litre boot, while the estate boasts a generous 635-litre capacity, positioning it as a strong contender for families.
Throughout its production, the Focus was available with a wide range of efficient EcoBoost petrol and diesel engines, including mild-hybrid options introduced post-facelift. All Mk4 Focus models are ULEZ-compliant, contributing to competitive running costs. While later models gained a larger SYNC4 touchscreen, the integration of climate controls into the screen might not appeal to all buyers. Despite its discontinuation, the Focus remains a well-rounded and highly competitive used family hatchback.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise engaging handling, practicality for families, a wide range of efficient engines, and ULEZ compliance.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most distinctive styling, a premium-feeling interior like the VW Golf, the absolute largest boot space in its class (e.g., Skoda Octavia), or those who prefer physical climate controls over touchscreen integration.

The Verdict
You should buy the Focus if: You're a driver who prioritises engaging handling, practicality for families, a wide range of efficient engines, and ULEZ compliance.
Consider alternatives if: You seek the most distinctive styling, a premium-feeling interior (like the VW Golf), the absolute largest boot space in its class, or prefer physical climate controls.
Competitive Position: The Ford Focus (2018-2025) stands out in the family hatchback segment for its exceptional driving dynamics and steering feel, often surpassing rivals like the Volkswagen Golf in this regard. It offers a practical and spacious interior, a diverse range of efficient engines, and good value on the used market. While some competitors might offer more luxurious interiors or larger boot capacities, the Focus provides a compelling all-round package, particularly for those who enjoy driving, and its ULEZ compliance adds to its appeal.

4.5 Overall rating
(91 reviews)The car was perfect for my needs to travel daily up and down the motorway to work, a 30 mile round trip. excellent value for money.
No 5 star rating due to most engines being fitted with wet timing belt. An absolutely disastrous idea in comparison to a chain. Unfortunately many manufacturers are starting to use wet belts, which inevitably will lead to expensive belt failures, and even simple replacements are expensive. In the case of the Focus a great car with in built fragility by Ford
Reliable, comfortable economical stylish, easy to work on. Need I say more
I brought a 2016 focus st3 good interior size nice features and really nice drive. Really nice sporty car and still good for family
Its a good car and is worth the money.
