Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Rewarding to drive and comfortable to travel in	Not quite as sharp to drive as a Ford S-Max
Plenty of space in all three rows of seats	Powerful petrol models are thirsty
Decent boot, even when all seven seats are in use	Lacks sliding rear doors

Quick Summary

The Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) is a large, versatile seven-seat MPV that combines practicality with genuine driving enjoyment. With a roomy interior, flexible seating arrangements, and impressive boot space, it's one of the most capable people carriers available. The Galaxy features powered middle and third-row seats that fold into the floor, accommodating three child seats with Isofix points. With all seats upright, there's 300 litres of boot space, expanding to 2,339 litres with seats folded. The cabin is quiet and comfortable, with excellent family-friendly storage including deep door bins, picnic tables, and cupholders throughout.

Ford's engineering expertise shines through in the Galaxy's driving dynamics, which are notably more engaging than many rivals. The ride is smooth and composed, handling rough surfaces well whilst maintaining a serene, civilised atmosphere. Engine options have evolved over the model's life, from initial choices of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrols and 2.0-litre diesels to the later EcoBlue diesels and finally the 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid. Most versions offer reasonable running costs, though the most powerful petrol and diesel engines are thirsty. The Galaxy received a subtle facelift in 2019 with refreshed styling and enhanced equipment, though production ended in 2022 without a direct replacement announced.

Best for: Growing families seeking a spacious, comfortable seven-seat car with excellent practicality, those prioritising driving enjoyment in an MPV, and buyers wanting flexible seating and generous boot space.

Not ideal for: Those seeking the sharpest handling (consider the Ford S-Max instead), buyers wanting sliding rear doors (like the Seat Alhambra or Volkswagen Sharan), or those requiring the most economical running costs with powerful engines.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Galaxy if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable seven-seat family car with excellent practicality, genuine driving enjoyment, and flexible seating arrangements.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the sharpest handling, require sliding rear doors, or need the most economical running costs with powerful engines.

Competitive Position: The Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) is a standout choice in the MPV market, offering superior driving dynamics compared to most rivals. Whilst the Seat Alhambra and Volkswagen Sharan provide sliding doors and comparable practicality, the Galaxy rewards drivers with more engaging handling and a more refined driving experience. The Citroën Grand C4 Picasso is less sharp to drive, making the Galaxy the preferred option for those who value both practicality and driving enjoyment. Its combination of space, comfort, and performance makes it an excellent seven-seat family car for those willing to embrace the MPV format.
