These cars are ok but unfortunately not as good as the first generation. Seating is ample but even the front seats are not that comfortable especially on long distance journeys. The seats are not as padded in previous versions. The rear 2 seats are more like children’s. Although the rear 5 seats fold into the floor so you do not have to take them out there’s less boot/ carrying space and the change of shape makes it difficult to put larger items in as the rear boot access isn’t square like the mark 1. Driving position is ok but again not as high up as the former model. The doors catch on higher pavements. Servicing is difficult. Oil change if DIY is problematic. You have to raise front end to drop under trays. Oil sump plug then easy to access and open. However oil filter you have to remove the oil filler pipe which needs either a special tool or creativity with what you have. Fuel filter once fitted even my garage has issues bleeding through. Also so many with gear box faults particularly the automatic where regular transmission fluid changes are required. Most people don’t realise this. Again a specialist job. Manual version better with better fuel consumption. Diesel fuel consumption a little down on earlier models. Petrol will always be more thirsty but will satisfy ulez requirements. New + 2016 diesel’s will probably be ulez compliant but check before buying as dependent in those wonderful Europe ratings. Summary probably would rate it closer to 4 if I hadn’t driven the bigger mark 1 version that converts more like a small van.

Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rewarding to drive and comfortable to travel in | Not quite as sharp to drive as a Ford S-Max |
| Plenty of space in all three rows of seats | Powerful petrol models are thirsty |
| Decent boot, even when all seven seats are in use | Lacks sliding rear doors |
Quick Summary
The Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) is a large, versatile seven-seat MPV that combines practicality with genuine driving enjoyment. With a roomy interior, flexible seating arrangements, and impressive boot space, it's one of the most capable people carriers available. The Galaxy features powered middle and third-row seats that fold into the floor, accommodating three child seats with Isofix points. With 300 litres of boot space with all seats upright and up to 2,339 litres with seats folded, it handles family life with ease. The cabin is quiet and comfortable, with thoughtful storage solutions including deep door bins, picnic tables, and cupholders throughout.
Ford's engineering expertise shines through in the Galaxy's driving dynamics, which are notably more engaging than rivals like the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso or Volkswagen Sharan. Engine options have evolved over the model's life, from initial 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrols and diesels to the final 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid. The 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engines offer the best balance of performance and economy, achieving around 40-46mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are generally modest, with vehicle excise duty capped at £265 annually. The Galaxy remains an excellent choice for families prioritising space and comfort over trendy SUV styling.
Best for: Growing families needing seven seats, those seeking a practical and comfortable people carrier, and drivers who value engaging handling alongside practicality.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting the sharpest driving dynamics (consider the Ford S-Max), those requiring sliding rear doors, or those seeking the lowest possible fuel consumption with powerful petrol engines.

| Ford Galaxy | 5/5 | 4.0/5 | 32.2% | 4.3/5 |

| Volkswagen Sharan | 4/5 | N/A | 32.8% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Galaxy if: You need a spacious seven-seat family car that's rewarding to drive, prioritise comfort and practicality, and want a vehicle that handles better than typical MPVs.
Consider alternatives if: You require sliding rear doors, seek the sharpest handling dynamics, or want the absolute lowest fuel consumption with powerful engines.
Competitive Position: The Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) is a standout performer in the MPV market, offering superior driving dynamics compared to most rivals. Whilst the Seat Alhambra matches it for user satisfaction and the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso offers better value deals, the Galaxy's combination of engaging handling, spacious interior, and genuine comfort makes it an excellent choice for families. It outperforms the Volkswagen Sharan in expert ratings and overall appeal. The Galaxy represents a thoughtful balance between practicality and driving enjoyment, making it ideal for those who refuse to compromise on either aspect.
