Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More practical than most city cars | Dull looks |
| The majority of Ka+ models have smartphone mirroring | Lacklustre engines |
| Supple ride | Down-market interior |
Quick Summary
The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) was introduced as a more spacious and practical replacement for the original Ka, positioned between city cars and superminis. Based on the Fiesta platform, it offers impressive ride comfort and responsive steering, inheriting some of Ford's renowned driving dynamics. However, its styling is often described as bland, and the interior, while practical, features hard, budget-oriented plastics. Despite this, it provides good space for adults in the rear and a decent 270-litre boot, making it more practical than many city car rivals.
Engine options include older 1.2-litre petrol units (68-74bhp) that deliver lacklustre performance, though a more efficient 1.5-litre diesel (94bhp) was added in 2018. Running costs are low, with good fuel economy (up to 68.9mpg for the diesel), cheap insurance, and affordable servicing. Post-2018 facelift models benefit from the SYNC3 touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While it lacks sparkle and premium appeal, the Ka+ remains a sensible, budget-friendly option for those prioritising practicality and comfort over flair.
Best for: Buyers on a tight budget, those needing more interior space than a typical city car, drivers prioritising a comfortable ride and low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking stylish looks, a premium interior feel, strong engine performance, or the dynamic handling of a true supermini.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Ka+ | 2/5 | 4.3/5 | 34.8% | 3.9/5 |
| Skoda Citigo | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.1% | 4.3/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.8% | 4.5/5 |
| Dacia Sandero | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.9% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Ka+ if: You're on a budget, need more space than a city car, and prioritise a comfortable ride and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You want stylish looks, a premium interior, strong performance, or a more engaging driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) aimed to bridge the gap between city cars and superminis, offering impressive practicality and ride comfort derived from its Fiesta underpinnings. While it excels in affordability and low running costs, its bland styling, budget interior, and lacklustre engine performance mean it struggles to compete with more refined rivals like the Hyundai i10 or the well-packaged Skoda Citigo. It represents a sensible, honest choice for budget-conscious buyers, but compromises are evident.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)This car is particularly good value if it includes the winter and City packs.
The car feels somewhat dated compared to rivals. The interior does not have much quality with a tiny entertainment screen. The lower powered model felt very underpowered so, Id consider paying the extra for the far better Fiesta.
Ka features are excellent for me. Good value for money.. to me nothing is missing. I like the facia layout. I’m an old geezer, and as I have broken my femur, I find it hard to get into my fiesta, the Ka is quite a few inches higher, I’m just looking for the best one at present, within my price range.
