Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More practical than most city cars | Dull looks |
| The majority of Ka+ models have smartphone mirroring | Lacklustre engines |
| Supple ride | Down-market interior |
Quick Summary
The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) is a practical city car that sits between the traditional city car and supermini segments. Based on the Fiesta platform, it offers more interior space and rear legroom than its predecessor, with a 270-litre boot expanding to 849 litres with the rear seats folded. The higher roofline and rear doors make it more accessible and family-friendly, whilst the driving position and cubby storage are well-designed for a small car. However, the cabin prioritises practicality over premium appeal, with hard plastics and a spartan dashboard reflecting its budget positioning.
The Ka+ benefits from the Fiesta's sophisticated suspension and responsive steering, delivering a supple ride and precise handling that belie its modest appearance. Engine options include two 1.2-litre petrol variants (68bhp and 74bhp) and a 1.5-litre diesel (94bhp) introduced at the 2018 facelift. Fuel economy ranges from 49.5mpg to 68.9mpg depending on engine choice, with low CO2 emissions and competitive insurance costs. The post-2018 models feature the user-friendly SYNC3 touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking practicality and low running costs.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical family car, those prioritising low running costs and insurance premiums, and drivers wanting more space than a traditional city car.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium styling or a high-quality interior, those wanting spirited performance, or those preferring a more fashionable design.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Ford Ka+ | 2/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.8% | 3.9/5 |

| Skoda Citigo | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.4% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Ka+ if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a practical family car with low running costs, or wanting more space than a traditional city car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium styling, a high-quality interior, spirited performance, or a more fashionable design.
Competitive Position: The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) occupies an awkward middle ground between city cars and superminis, which ultimately undermines its appeal. Whilst it shares the Fiesta's solid foundations and dynamic abilities, cost-cutting measures—particularly lacklustre engines and a down-market interior—weaken its proposition. The Hyundai i10 and Skoda Citigo offer superior overall packages with better-quality interiors and more equipment, whilst the Dacia Sandero provides excellent value as a true supermini. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising practicality and low costs, the Ka+ remains a sensible choice, but rivals offer stronger ownership propositions.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)This car is particularly good value if it includes the winter and City packs.
The car feels somewhat dated compared to rivals. The interior does not have much quality with a tiny entertainment screen. The lower powered model felt very underpowered so, Id consider paying the extra for the far better Fiesta.
Ka features are excellent for me. Good value for money.. to me nothing is missing. I like the facia layout. I’m an old geezer, and as I have broken my femur, I find it hard to get into my fiesta, the Ka is quite a few inches higher, I’m just looking for the best one at present, within my price range.
