Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More practical than most city cars | Dull looks |
| The majority of Ka+ models have smartphone mirroring | Lacklustre engines |
| Supple ride | Down-market interior |
Quick Summary
The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) was designed as a more spacious and practical replacement for the original Ka, built on the larger Fiesta platform. It aimed to bridge the gap between city cars and superminis, prioritising versatility over premium appeal or fashionable looks. With a higher roofline and rear doors, it offers good headroom and legroom for adults in the back, making it a usable family car. Boot space is 270 litres, expanding to 849 litres with the rear seats folded, which is larger than most city cars.
Despite its somewhat bland styling and budget interior, the Ka+ benefits from Fiesta-derived underpinnings, providing an impressively supple ride and direct, responsive steering. However, its 1.2-litre petrol engines (68bhp or 74bhp) are lacklustre, though a more capable 94bhp 1.5-litre diesel was introduced in 2018. A 2018 facelift brought updated infotainment with SYNC3, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Running costs are low, with reasonable fuel economy (up to 55.4mpg for petrol, 68.9mpg for diesel), low CO2 emissions, and cheap insurance.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, those seeking a practical and spacious car that bridges the gap between city cars and superminis, and buyers who prioritize ride comfort and handling over engine performance or premium interior finishes.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising exciting engine performance, a premium interior, or distinctive styling. Also not ideal for those who need a truly large boot with the rear seats folded, as rivals offer more.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Ka+ | 2/5 | 4.3/5 | 35.8% | 3.9/5 |
| Dacia Sandero | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.6% | 4.1/5 |
| Skoda Citigo | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 28.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 26.7% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Ka+ if: You're on a budget, seeking a practical and spacious car that bridges the gap between city cars and superminis, or prioritise ride comfort and handling over outright engine performance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise exciting engine performance, a premium interior, distinctive styling, or need a larger boot capacity with seats folded.
Competitive Position: The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) positions itself as a practical and spacious option between city cars and superminis. While it benefits from Fiesta-derived ride and handling, its bland styling, budget interior, and lacklustre petrol engines undermine its potential. It offers excellent value and low running costs, making it suitable for budget-conscious buyers, but rivals like the Hyundai i10 or Skoda Citigo offer a more refined package or stronger overall ownership proposition despite their smaller size.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)This car is particularly good value if it includes the winter and City packs.
The car feels somewhat dated compared to rivals. The interior does not have much quality with a tiny entertainment screen. The lower powered model felt very underpowered so, Id consider paying the extra for the far better Fiesta.
Ka features are excellent for me. Good value for money.. to me nothing is missing. I like the facia layout. I’m an old geezer, and as I have broken my femur, I find it hard to get into my fiesta, the Ka is quite a few inches higher, I’m just looking for the best one at present, within my price range.
