Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More practical than most city cars | Dull looks |
| The majority of Ka+ models have smartphone mirroring | Lacklustre engines |
| Supple ride | Down-market interior |
Quick Summary
The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) is a practical city car that sits between the traditional city car and supermini segments. Based on the Fiesta platform, it offers more interior space than its predecessor, with a higher roofline and rear doors providing improved accessibility. The 270-litre boot expands to 849 litres with the rear seats folded. Despite its unglamorous styling, the Ka+ benefits from Ford's engineering expertise, delivering a supple ride and responsive handling that belies its budget positioning. The cabin prioritises practicality over premium appeal, with hard-wearing plastics and functional design throughout.
Engine options include two 1.2-litre petrol variants producing 68bhp or 74bhp, with real-world fuel economy around 40-50mpg, and a 1.5-litre diesel introduced at the 2018 facelift offering 68.9mpg. Running costs are low, with competitive insurance groups and affordable servicing. The 2018 facelift brought updated styling, the user-friendly SYNC3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and new engine options. However, lacklustre engines and a down-market interior undermine its appeal against stronger rivals.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, spacious city car with a comfortable ride and low running costs, particularly those valuing smartphone connectivity and versatility over premium aesthetics.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics, premium interior quality, distinctive styling, or powerful engines, or those seeking a more accomplished all-rounder in the supermini segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Ford Ka+ | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 28.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Dacia Sandero | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.6% | 4.1/5 |
| Skoda Citigo | 5/5 | 4.2/5 | 28.9% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Ka+ if: You're on a tight budget, seeking a practical and spacious city car with a comfortable ride, low running costs, and modern connectivity features like smartphone mirroring.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, premium interior quality, distinctive styling, powerful engines, or a more accomplished all-rounder in the supermini segment.
Competitive Position: The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) occupies an awkward middle ground between city cars and superminis, which ultimately works against it. Whilst it benefits from Ford's solid engineering foundations and offers genuine practicality with a supple ride, the lacklustre engines and down-market interior undermine its proposition. The Hyundai i10 is a stronger overall choice, offering impressive on-road ability, a higher-quality interior, and more equipment. The Skoda Citigo and Dacia Sandero also present more compelling alternatives, with the latter offering exceptional value and user satisfaction. The Ka+ remains a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers, but it lacks the refinement and appeal of its key competitors.

4 Overall rating
(2 reviews)This car is particularly good value if it includes the winter and City packs.
The car feels somewhat dated compared to rivals. The interior does not have much quality with a tiny entertainment screen. The lower powered model felt very underpowered so, Id consider paying the extra for the far better Fiesta.
