Ford Mustang (2014-2023) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fabulous V8 engine in GT models	High running costs
Brawny styling and driving experience	Four-cylinder models miss the point
Bullitt and Mach 1 versions add extra appeal	Cramped rear seats

Quick Summary

The Ford Mustang (2014-2023) is an iconic American muscle car that was finally made available to UK buyers in right-hand-drive form. This sixth-generation model, facelifted in 2018, combines throwback styling with modern engineering, featuring a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension that makes it more suitable for British roads than previous generations. Available with either a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder or a 5.0-litre V8 engine, the Mustang delivers genuine muscle car character with a bellowing soundtrack and impressive performance, particularly in GT form. The cabin takes inspiration from the original 1960s Mustang with a double-cowl dashboard, though some interior plastics feel hard and scratchy.

As a used buy, the Mustang offers exceptional value for money, delivering proper rear-wheel-drive muscle car presence at a fraction of the cost of European performance rivals. Special versions such as the Bullitt and Mach 1 add extra appeal for enthusiasts, whilst the Fastback's 408-litre boot makes it surprisingly practical. Running costs are significant, particularly for V8 models, with realistic fuel consumption around 20mpg for the V8 and 30mpg for the EcoBoost. However, servicing and maintenance are relatively affordable compared to exotic European sports cars, and the strong following ensures parts and specialist knowledge are readily available.

Best for: Muscle car enthusiasts seeking authentic American character, drivers wanting a charismatic rear-wheel-drive coupe or convertible, and those seeking V8 performance at attainable prices.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising rear-seat comfort, those concerned about fuel economy, or drivers seeking the sharpest handling dynamics of European sports cars.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mustang if: You're a muscle car enthusiast seeking authentic American character, want a charismatic rear-wheel-drive coupe or convertible, or desire V8 performance at attainable prices.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear-seat comfort, are concerned about fuel economy, or seek the sharpest handling dynamics of European sports cars.

Competitive Position: The Ford Mustang (2014-2023) stands apart from its rivals by offering genuine muscle car character and V8 performance at a significantly lower price point than European alternatives such as the Porsche 911 and BMW M4. Whilst it cannot match these rivals for handling precision, sophistication or rear-seat comfort, the Mustang delivers an unmatched sense of occasion and driving theatre. For buyers seeking authentic American muscle car appeal with practical usability and attainable running costs, the Mustang is a compelling choice that rivals cannot replicate.
