Ford Ranger (2023-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Car-like build quality and levels of equipment	EcoBlue diesel engines have a poor reliability record
More enjoyable to drive than a pickup should be	Rival trucks from Isuzu and KGM are cheaper
Huge portrait-style touchscreen on some models	UK-spec Raptor is limited to 288bhp (US version gets 400bhp)

Quick Summary

The Ford Ranger (2023-present) is Europe's best-selling pickup truck, offering an impressive blend of car-like comfort and genuine load-carrying capability. This latest generation builds on the proven T6 platform with bold, modern styling and significantly improved technology. The Ranger is available with multiple engine options, including a new plug-in hybrid variant launched in mid-2025 that delivers 277bhp and an electric-only range of 25 miles. Whether specified as a workhorse or luxury family vehicle, the Ranger delivers a remarkably refined driving experience for a pickup, with smooth ride quality, impressive manoeuvrability, and comprehensive standard equipment across all trim levels.

The Wildtrak trim represents the sweet spot for most buyers, offering leather seats, alloy wheels, dual-zone air-conditioning, and a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Running costs are reasonable for a vehicle of this size, with the plug-in hybrid offering potential fuel savings for regular commuters. All models feature all-wheel drive with multiple drive modes, serious off-road capability, and comprehensive safety equipment. The Ranger's towing capacity of 3,500kg makes it genuinely practical for work or leisure, whilst the load bed remains spacious and well-designed. However, potential buyers should be aware of reliability concerns with the EcoBlue diesel engines and consider that rival trucks from Isuzu and KGM offer cheaper alternatives.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium pickup with car-like comfort and technology, those needing genuine load-carrying capability with family-car refinement, and fleet operators valuing build quality and equipment levels.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers prioritising lowest purchase price, those concerned about diesel engine reliability, or drivers seeking the highest performance (UK Raptor is limited to 288bhp).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ranger if: You want a premium pickup with car-like comfort and technology, need genuine load-carrying capability with family-car refinement, or are a fleet operator valuing build quality and equipment levels.

Consider alternatives if: You are prioritising the lowest purchase price, concerned about diesel engine reliability, or seeking the highest performance (UK Raptor is limited to 288bhp).

Competitive Position: The Ford Ranger is Europe's top-selling pickup and our favourite of the lot. It delivers a more refined and car-like driving experience than rivals, with superior build quality, technology, and equipment levels. Whilst the Toyota Hilux offers better value and the Volkswagen Amarok matches it for user satisfaction, the Ranger's combination of comfort, capability, and technology makes it the standout choice for buyers seeking a premium pickup. The new plug-in hybrid option further strengthens its appeal for those with regular commuting patterns. However, potential buyers should weigh the higher purchase price against cheaper alternatives from Isuzu and KGM, and consider reliability concerns with the EcoBlue diesel engines.
