Ford S-Max (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than other MPVs | Third row is cramped compared with the Ford Galaxy's |
| Vast boot with the third row folded | Hybrid models aren't quite so good to drive |
| Well equipped | Petrol models are very thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Ford S-Max (2015-present) is a highly practical and versatile seven-seat MPV that uniquely combines family-friendly functionality with genuinely satisfying driving dynamics, a rare trait in its segment. Despite its substantial size, it offers a finessed and engaging experience behind the wheel, thanks to impressive grip, precise steering, and supportive suspension. With the rearmost seats folded, it boasts a vast 700-litre boot, expanding to a van-like 2,000 litres with all rear seats down, making it exceptionally capable for cargo.
This second-generation S-Max features a well-equipped interior, with quality materials in key contact areas and the SYNC3 infotainment system (on later models) supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The engine lineup has evolved, now centred around a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid that can achieve around 50mpg on long journeys. While earlier petrol models can be thirsty, diesels offer strong pulling power and good fuel economy (45-50mpg). As a used car, the S-Max represents excellent value due to its initial depreciation, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious families.
Best for: Families needing a practical and versatile seven-seater, drivers who appreciate engaging dynamics even in an MPV, and used car buyers seeking good value.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum third-row space (compared to rivals like the Ford Galaxy), those who prefer an SUV aesthetic, or those sensitive to the driving characteristics of hybrid models.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 3.8/5 | 33.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Peugeot 5008 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroen Grand C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 45.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the S-Max if: You're happy to move away from the SUV trend, need a practical and versatile seven-seater for family use, or appreciate an MPV with genuinely engaging driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum third-row space (Ford Galaxy offers more), prefer an SUV aesthetic, or find the hybrid's driving characteristics less appealing.
Competitive Position: The Ford S-Max (2015-present) carves out a strong niche in the seven-seat MPV market by uniquely blending exceptional practicality and versatility with genuinely rewarding driving dynamics. While it might not offer the largest third-row space compared to some rivals, its well-equipped interior, varied engine options (including efficient diesels and hybrids), and excellent value as a used car make it a highly recommendable choice for families seeking more than just basic transport. Its unfashionable MPV status can also translate into better used car deals.

3.8 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Excellent and fascinating 2013 Ford S-Max. Good buy for the family.
Very spacious for a 7 seater. Has good boot space and added extras included.
Fab for family of 6. Seats in boot not for adults or teenagers as not much leg room. Prefer 2008/09 dash
Absolutely diabolical! Picked up the car and didn’t even make it home before I started having problems with it! How it passed its MOT without any advisories only God knows! Definitely not worth what I paid at all!!!
I had a Seat Alhambra before this so I’m basically comparing it to that. The S Max is a great family car but it has a few little annoying niggles that are not good. The automatic gearbox is a bit slow at responding unless you keep it in sports mode. The phone connected to Bluetooth can’t seem to ever select the right contact, keeps bringing up 3 or 4 on the screen then distracts you by asking you to choose when you have asked clearly who you want. Another annoying thing is the parcel shelf catches on the 2 rear seatbelts every time you open or close it and it very difficult to remove without scraping the plastic.
