I own a 59plate and absolutely love it. Looking at changing for another one a bit younger. I love the flexibility with the seven seats and the storage. It ticks all my boxes.👍🚗

Overall, this is a very good 7-seater. Downsides are that parts are expensive and it is prone to electrical faults.

Ford S-Max (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than other MPVs | Third row is cramped compared with the Ford Galaxy's |
| Vast boot with the third row folded | Hybrid models aren't quite so good to drive |
| Well equipped | Petrol models are very thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Ford S-Max (2015-present) is a seven-seat MPV that defies expectations by combining genuine practicality with engaging driving dynamics. This second-generation model has earned a reputation as a car for keen drivers as well as families, offering an unusual blend of versatility and driving enjoyment rarely found in the MPV segment. With all models featuring seven seats, the S-Max provides exceptional flexibility, including a vast 2,000-litre boot with all rear seats folded and 700 litres with the rearmost two seats down. The cabin is flooded with light from large windows, and the three individual middle-row seats slide and recline, allowing occupants to customise their comfort. Despite its substantial dimensions, the S-Max is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre thanks to excellent visibility and a well-positioned driving seat.
The S-Max delivers finessed driving dynamics that belie its family-friendly purpose, with super-supportive suspension, precise steering and sweetly-weighted controls that make it a delightful car to drive on motorways, open roads and in city settings. Engine options have evolved over time, with early models offering turbocharged petrols and multiple diesel variants, whilst later versions feature a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid with CVT automatic. Diesel engines are the standout choice for their refined performance, mid-range muscle and superior fuel economy of 45-50mpg. The hybrid achieves up to 50mpg on longer journeys with lower emissions, though its CVT gearbox feels somewhat lethargic. Servicing costs are amongst the lowest of any major dealer network, and the S-Max's unfashionable status compared to trendy SUVs means excellent discounts are available on the used market.
Best for: Families seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting excellent value through discounting, and drivers who prioritise versatility and comfort over SUV trends.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum third-row legroom, those seeking the latest hybrid technology with responsive performance, or drivers of petrol-only models concerned about fuel consumption.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 27.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Peugeot 5008 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroën Grand C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 45.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the S-Max if: You're seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, want excellent value through discounting, or prioritise versatility and comfort over SUV trends.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum third-row legroom, seek the latest hybrid technology with responsive performance, or are concerned about fuel consumption in petrol-only models.
Competitive Position: The Ford S-Max (2015-present) stands out in the seven-seat market as a car that genuinely rewards keen drivers whilst serving families exceptionally well. Its superior driving dynamics set it apart from rivals like the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso and Volkswagen Touran, offering a more engaging experience without compromising practicality. Whilst the Peugeot 5008 offers better value deals and the Citroën provides more generous third-row space, the S-Max's combination of handling, comfort and versatility makes it an excellent choice for those willing to step away from the SUV trend. Its unfashionable status means significant discounts are available, making it outstanding value for money on the used market.
