Ford S-Max (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Better to drive than other MPVs	Third row is cramped compared with the Ford Galaxy's
Vast boot with the third row folded	Hybrid models aren't quite so good to drive
Well equipped	Petrol models are very thirsty

Quick Summary

The Ford S-Max is a seven-seat MPV that combines practicality with genuine driving enjoyment, a rare combination in the people carrier market. This second-generation model, launched in 2015, remains one of the most recommendable seven-seaters available. With all models featuring seven seats, the S-Max offers exceptional versatility: with the rearmost seats folded, the boot expands to a van-like 2,000 litres. The cabin is flooded with light from large windows, and the three individual middle-row seats slide and recline for added comfort. Storage solutions abound, including deep door bins and aircraft-style folding seat-back trays, whilst all three middle seats feature Isofix mounting points for child seats.

Despite its substantial dimensions, the S-Max delivers finessed driving dynamics that belie its family-friendly purpose. The suspension is super-supportive, providing impressive grip, precise steering and sweetly-weighted controls, whilst the ride remains calm and comfortable. Engine options have evolved considerably: early models offered turbocharged petrol or five diesel variants, but by 2019, petrol engines were ditched in favour of two diesel options. From late 2021, a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid with CVT automatic became the sole offering. Diesel engines are the best choice for fuel economy and pulling power, achieving 45-50mpg, whilst hybrid models deliver up to 50mpg on longer journeys. Servicing costs are amongst the lowest of any major dealer network, with flexible service plans available.

Best for: Families seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting excellent versatility and boot space, and buyers prioritising value over trendy SUV styling.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum third-row legroom, drivers preferring hybrid performance, or those seeking the most economical petrol option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the S-Max if: You're seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, excellent versatility and boot space, or looking to avoid trendy SUV styling whilst maintaining excellent value.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum third-row legroom, prefer hybrid performance characteristics, or need the most economical petrol option available.

Competitive Position: The Ford S-Max (2015-present) stands out in the seven-seat MPV market for its superior driving dynamics and practicality. Whilst the Peugeot 5008 achieves higher user ratings and the Volkswagen Touran offers comparable overall ratings, the S-Max delivers a more engaging drive than its rivals. Its vast boot space with the third row folded, well-equipped interior and strong diesel engine options make it an excellent choice for families prioritising versatility and driving enjoyment. The S-Max represents outstanding value in the used market, particularly when diesel-powered examples are selected for their superior fuel economy and pulling power.
