I own a 59plate and absolutely love it. Looking at changing for another one a bit younger. I love the flexibility with the seven seats and the storage. It ticks all my boxes.👍🚗

Overall, this is a very good 7-seater. Downsides are that parts are expensive and it is prone to electrical faults.

Ford S-Max (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than other MPVs | Third row is cramped compared with the Ford Galaxy's |
| Vast boot with the third row folded | Hybrid models aren't quite so good to drive |
| Well equipped | Petrol models are very thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Ford S-Max is a seven-seat MPV that defies expectations by combining genuine practicality with engaging driving dynamics. This second-generation model, launched in 2015, offers exceptional versatility with a 700-litre boot that expands to a van-like 2,000 litres with all rear seats folded. The spacious cabin features three individual middle-row seats with Isofix points for child seats, excellent visibility, and thoughtful storage solutions. Despite its substantial size, the S-Max is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre through traffic and parking spaces, thanks to its multi-adjustable driving position and expansive windows.
The S-Max delivers a refined driving experience that far exceeds typical MPV standards, with supportive suspension, precise steering and impressive agility even when fully laden. Engine options have evolved from early turbocharged petrols and multiple diesel variants to a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid with CVT automatic. Diesel models offer the best balance of performance and economy, achieving 45-50mpg, whilst hybrid versions deliver superior fuel efficiency at around 50mpg on longer journeys. Running costs are competitive, with affordable servicing and parts through Ford's dealer network. As a used purchase, the S-Max represents excellent value, with heavy new car discounting benefiting the second-hand market.
Best for: Families seeking a practical seven-seater with engaging driving dynamics, those wanting to avoid the SUV trend, and buyers prioritising versatility and comfort over fashionable badge appeal.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum third-row legroom, drivers preferring hybrid powertrains for their driving experience, or those seeking the lowest possible fuel consumption with petrol engines.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford S-Max | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Peugeot 5008 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 36.4% | 4.5/5 |
| Citroen Grand C4 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 38.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen Touran | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the S-Max if: You're seeking a practical seven-seater that's genuinely enjoyable to drive, want to avoid the SUV trend, or prioritise versatility and comfort for family life.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum third-row legroom, prefer hybrid powertrains for their driving characteristics, or need the absolute lowest fuel consumption with petrol engines.
Competitive Position: The Ford S-Max (2015-present) stands out in the seven-seat MPV market by delivering superior driving dynamics that rival many saloons. Whilst the Peugeot 5008 and Citroen Grand C4 Picasso offer slightly better value propositions and the Volkswagen Touran provides premium appeal, the S-Max excels in combining engaging handling with practical versatility. Its unfashionable status as an MPV in an SUV-dominated market means excellent discounts are available, making it an astute choice for families prioritising driving enjoyment alongside practicality. The diesel engines offer the best real-world performance and economy, whilst the hybrid option suits those focused purely on fuel efficiency.
