Ford Transit Courier (2023-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Enjoyable to drive	Some might find the driving position awkward
Most versions fairly well equipped	Predictably dour interior quality
Competitive load bay and practicality	Entry-level version is rather basic

Quick Summary

The Ford Transit Courier (2023-present) is the smallest vehicle in Ford's Transit van family, built on the same platform as the Ford Puma SUV. This compact van offers impressive practicality with a 2.91 cubic metre load bay, 820kg maximum payload, and side-hinged rear doors that open to 90 degrees (or up to 180 degrees with optional hinge stoppers). Most versions feature a useful sliding side door for enhanced access, whilst all models include a steel bulkhead, six lashing eyes, and extensive cabin storage. The loadbay is lined with hard-wearing plastic and designed to accommodate two Euro pallets.

The Courier delivers surprising driver appeal for a commercial vehicle, thanks to its Puma-derived platform offering responsive handling and accurate steering. Engine options include two turbocharged 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrols (99bhp and 123bhp) and a 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel (99bhp), with fuel economy ranging from 42-55mpg depending on engine and driving conditions. The SYNC4 infotainment system features an 8.0-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Trend trim and above include air-conditioning, heated seats, and a heated windscreen, whilst Limited and Active trims add climate control, reversing cameras, and alloy wheels. Refinement is surprisingly good, and the vehicle combines practicality with a cheerful character rarely found in compact vans.

Best for: Tradespeople and small businesses needing a compact, practical van with enjoyable driving dynamics, and those seeking good equipment levels without excessive size.

Not ideal for: Drivers requiring maximum load space, those sensitive to dour interior plastics, or those needing the most powerful engine performance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Transit Courier if: You need a compact, practical van with enjoyable driving dynamics, seek good equipment levels, or require a vehicle that combines commercial practicality with surprising driver appeal.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum load space, prioritise premium interior quality, or need the most powerful engine performance available.

Competitive Position: The Ford Transit Courier is one of the best compact vans available, offering impressive practicality combined with driver appeal rarely found in commercial vehicles. Whilst it lacks the premium badge appeal of rivals like the Audi Q2 and MINI Countryman, and doesn't match their overall CarGurus ratings, the Courier excels in its segment by delivering responsive handling, good equipment levels on most trims, and competitive running costs. Its Puma-derived platform ensures engaging driving dynamics, whilst the diesel engine option provides excellent fuel economy for regular motorway use. For tradespeople and small businesses seeking a practical, enjoyable compact van, the Transit Courier represents excellent value and a genuinely cheerful alternative to more utilitarian competitors.
