Ford Transit Custom (2012-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better to drive than most commercial vehicles | Bouncy ride if van isn't loaded |
| Tough and durable mechanical parts | Pre-2018 facelift vans have less storage space in the cab |
| High payloads | There was no electric version |
Quick Summary
The Ford Transit Custom (2012-2022) is a versatile, hardworking medium-sized van that sits perfectly between Ford's smaller Transit Connect and larger Transit models. Available in multiple configurations including standard van, Double Cab, and Kombi variants, it offers flexible body lengths (L1 and L2) and heights (H1 and H2) to suit various business needs. The 2018 facelift brought a more modern cab with improved storage, updated infotainment, and refined styling with slimmer headlights and LED daytime running lights. High payloads ranging from 686kg to 1,459kg make it an excellent choice for commercial operators.
The Transit Custom's engine lineup centres on the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel, available in 104bhp, 128bhp, 168bhp, and 182bhp variants, with a mild hybrid option delivering up to 55.4mpg. A 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol plug-in hybrid offering 35 miles of electric range was introduced in 2019. The van drives remarkably well for a commercial vehicle with direct steering, neat handling, and strong brakes. Running costs are competitive, especially with the lower-powered diesels achieving 43-47mpg. Multiple trim levels from spartan Leader to premium MS-RT ensure options for every budget, whilst the 2018 facelift significantly improved cab practicality and comfort.
Best for: Business owners and fleet operators seeking a versatile, hardworking van with excellent payload capacity, drivers prioritising a car-like driving experience in a commercial vehicle, and those needing flexible configurations for passengers and cargo.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring an electric van option, those who frequently drive unladen vans and prefer a smooth ride, or operators needing maximum cab storage in pre-2018 models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Transit Custom if: You're a business owner or fleet operator seeking a versatile, hardworking van with excellent payload capacity, you prioritise a car-like driving experience in a commercial vehicle, or you need flexible configurations for passengers and cargo.
Consider alternatives if: You require an electric van option, frequently drive unladen and prefer a smooth ride, or need maximum cab storage in pre-2018 models.
Competitive Position: The Ford Transit Custom (2012-2022) is a strong contender in the medium-sized van market, offering excellent versatility, high payloads, and a superior driving experience compared to most commercial rivals. Whilst the Vauxhall Vivaro edges ahead with slightly higher user ratings and the Volkswagen Transporter offers premium appeal, the Transit Custom delivers outstanding value with 42% good or great deals available. Its tough, durable mechanics, multiple configuration options, and competitive running costs make it an excellent all-rounder for businesses and operators seeking a practical, hardworking workhorse that's genuinely enjoyable to drive.
