Honda Civic (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Smooth and efficient hybrid system	Rear headroom and boot space tighter than on previous Civic
Comfortable and refined to drive	Performance only so-so
Pleasant interior and lots of standard equipment	Purchase prices are rather high

Quick Summary

The Honda Civic (2022-present), now in its 11th generation, is a practical and affordable family hatchback that combines sensible pragmatism with quality craftsmanship. Available exclusively as a petrol-electric hybrid (Civic e:HEV), it pairs a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors to deliver 180bhp. The self-charging hybrid system seamlessly switches between electric, hybrid, and engine drive modes, achieving an impressive official fuel economy of 60.1mpg. With a 410-litre boot and improved rear legroom compared to its predecessor, the Civic offers decent practicality, solid build quality, and a classy interior with plenty of standard equipment across three trim levels: Elegance, Sport, and Advance.

The Civic is a pleasant car to drive, offering a smooth ride, good body control, and responsive steering without the dynamic pitfalls common to other hybrids. Its eCVT transmission behaves like a conventional automatic, ensuring the engine rarely becomes strained or raucous. The 2025 facelift brought minor exterior and interior refinements, including a larger touchscreen on Sport models and wireless phone charging on Elegance trim. Running costs are competitive, particularly when compared to the Toyota Corolla hybrid, with similar servicing, maintenance, and insurance expenses. Overall, the Civic makes a worthy competitor to rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra, and Mazda 3, representing one of the very best cars in its class.

Best for: Buyers seeking a practical, comfortable, and refined family hatchback with excellent fuel efficiency, those prioritising a smooth hybrid driving experience, and drivers wanting plenty of standard equipment and quality interior design.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear headroom or boot space, buyers seeking thrilling performance, or customers wanting to minimise upfront purchase costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Civic if: You seek a practical, comfortable, and refined family hatchback with excellent fuel efficiency, prioritise a smooth hybrid driving experience, or want plenty of standard equipment and quality interior design.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear headroom or boot space, seek thrilling performance, or wish to minimise upfront purchase costs.

Competitive Position: The Honda Civic (2022-present) is a strong contender in the family hatchback segment, offering excellent refinement, a sophisticated hybrid system, and impressive standard equipment. Whilst it may not match the Volkswagen Golf for badge prestige or offer the value proposition of the Vauxhall Astra, the Civic's smooth driving dynamics, quality interior, and efficient powertrain make it one of the very best cars in its class. It competes closely with the Toyota Corolla hybrid on price and running costs, making it an excellent choice for buyers prioritising comfort and efficiency over outright performance or maximum practicality.
