Honda Civic (2016-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Dependable family transport | Frustrating infotainment |
| The Type R hot hatch is tremendous fun | Interior quality could be better |
| Choice of frugal engines | Regular models are rather ordinary to drive |
Quick Summary
The 10th generation Honda Civic (2016-2021) continues the model's long-standing reputation for reliability, though this iteration introduced flamboyant, divisive styling. Available as a five-door hatchback, it offers good passenger room with particularly generous rear kneeroom, and a practical 478-litre boot. While not matching rivals for interior flair or infotainment, it provides a comfortable and roomy cabin, with a driving experience that balances easy motorway manners with supple ride comfort and predictable handling.
Engine options include a frugal 1.0-litre (around 45mpg), a more powerful 1.5-litre petrol (around 40mpg), and an economical 1.6-litre diesel (often over 60mpg), all offering competitive running costs. While depreciation might be slightly higher than some rivals, used examples offer good value. The standard infotainment system can be slow, but SR trims offer a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. For performance enthusiasts, the exceptional Type R hot hatch provides a truly exciting drive.
Best for: Drivers seeking reliable, practical family transport with frugal engines and a comfortable, roomy cabin. Also great for those looking for an exciting hot hatch (Type R).
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior quality, cutting-edge infotainment, or the finest driving dynamics found in some rivals.

The Verdict
You should buy the Civic if: You're seeking reliable, practical family transport with frugal engines and a comfortable, roomy cabin, or looking for an exciting hot hatch (Type R).
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, cutting-edge infotainment, or the finest driving dynamics.
Competitive Position: The Honda Civic (2016-2021) is a strong contender in the family hatchback segment, offering a compelling blend of practicality, frugal engines, and a comfortable ride. While its infotainment system and interior quality may lag behind some key rivals like the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus, its reputation for reliability and competitive running costs make it a sensible choice. The exceptional Type R variant further broadens its appeal, offering a thrilling performance option. Ultimately, it's a good offering in a highly competitive class, especially for those prioritising dependability and value in the used market.

4.3 Overall rating
(40 reviews)I actual purchased this car after making it a favourite. It’s an amazing car…. I’m shocked at the performance for a 3 cylinder 1 litre turbo car. Strongly advise purchasing 1 for first time drivers or ppl than want to keep car cost down but have something with a little bit of sportiness out of a car
Having owned a Honda Civic for the last 10 years, we do know how good they are, so we decided to stick with the same model type, our new car is a dream car, it has every thing you need for safety and comfort, and ease to drive
So far I love the car. Economy seems good 45mpg mainly town. Very well equipped ( not quite as good as the Kia Sportage K5. ) very quiet and comfortable. Infotainment system takes some working out but performs well. Oh and it has a manual handbrake which is a big plus as far as I’m concerned. The fit and finish is superb. The 19” alloys really set it off. I tend to change cars quite often but I think I might keep this one longer than usual
I have had a 2008 civic se 1.4 from new for thirteen years, I have done 90,OOO faultless miles in it. The car still pulls away like a dream drives like a dream, Its like a bottle of vintage wine, it gets better with age and distance. I have just bought a new civic, fancied an upgrade but reluctant to get rid of the old one, Its just such a straight forward car car.
I liked the car so much I bought it. Very smooth drive and the tax is only £10 per year.
