Hyundai IONIQ (2017-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Choice of electrified powertrains | Not much fun to drive |
| Futuristic styling | Sloping roofline compromises rear headroom |
| Low running costs | Fidgety ride of EV and PHEV models |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai Ioniq (2017-2022) offered a unique solution to the dilemma of electrification, providing self-charging hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and full electric (EV) variants. This conventional family hatchback features sleek, aerodynamically influenced looks that help it stand out from rivals. Introduced in 2017, it received a subtle facelift in 2019, which included tweaked aesthetics, suspension improvements, and a larger battery for the electric model.
Inside, the Ioniq is spacious upfront, though the sloping roofline can limit rear headroom for taller passengers. It boasts a practical boot, with the Hybrid offering 443 litres and the EV/PHEV having 350/341 litres respectively, thanks to clever battery placement. While not a performance car, it's composed and capable, with light, accurate steering. Running costs are a major draw, with the Hybrid officially achieving 83.1mpg, the PHEV up to 256.8mpg (with regular charging), and the EV offering ranges of 174-193 miles. Insurance groups are also low, making it an economical choice.
Best for: Eco-conscious drivers seeking a choice of electrified powertrains (hybrid, PHEV, EV), those prioritising low running costs, practicality, and an affordable entry into EV ownership.
Not ideal for: Drivers who prioritise dynamic handling and a 'fun' driving experience, or taller passengers who require maximum rear headroom.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic handling, a 'fun' driving experience, or frequently transport taller passengers who need maximum rear headroom.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai Ioniq (2017-2022) stands out in the electrified hatchback market by offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric variants, catering to diverse eco-conscious buyers. Its blend of practicality, low running costs, and composed driving makes it a sensible choice, particularly for families or those new to electrification. While some rivals might offer a more engaging drive, the Ioniq delivers excellent value, comfort, and reliability, with the EV model providing an accessible route into electric car ownership.
