Hyundai i20 Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Well equipped, even if you choose the entry-level car | Patchy standard of interior finish |
| Easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment | Not the cheapest to buy |
| Solid reliability and a long warranty | Fuel economy is unspectacular |
Quick Summary
The third-generation Hyundai i20 has evolved from a perfectly worthy but unremarkable supermini into a more distinctive car with sharp exterior lines and real kerb appeal. While previous models were known for reliability and affordability, this latest i20 is no longer a budget option, pitching its starting price above many rivals. It offers a generous 352 litres of boot space and a practical five-door-only layout with ample room for four adults, though some interior plastics can feel a bit hard.
Under the bonnet, the i20 features a peppy 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 99bhp, which is willing and efficient, achieving around 45mpg in real-world driving. Its generous equipment, including a class-leading 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, helps justify its higher price point. However, despite its solid reliability and five-year unlimited mileage warranty, its list price and unspectacular fuel economy mean it doesn't always offer the best value compared to some rivals.
Best for: Buyers looking for a reliable, safe, and practical small car with excellent standard equipment, a class-leading infotainment system, and the reassurance of a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a strict budget, those prioritising class-leading fuel efficiency, or those seeking the finest driving dynamics and interior material quality found in some rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i20 | 3/5 | 5/5 | 28.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Polo | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.5% | 4.5/5 |

| Toyota Yaris | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i20 if: You're looking for a reliable, safe, and practical small car with excellent standard equipment, a class-leading infotainment system, and the reassurance of a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
Consider alternatives if: You are on a strict budget, prioritise class-leading fuel efficiency, or seek the finest driving dynamics and interior material quality found in some rivals.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i20 is a strong contender in the supermini segment, standing out with its distinctive design, generous standard features, and a highly praised infotainment system. While it offers solid practicality and a comfortable, grown-up feel on motorways, its higher price point and middle-of-the-road fuel economy mean it faces stiff competition. It provides a compelling package for those valuing modern tech and reliability over outright affordability or ultimate driving engagement.

5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Great to drive, nippy but solid, easy connectivity to phone etc
I know that it is known as quite boxy especially inside but the 2010 version rather than the 2009 seemed well thought through and it looked great for its value on the outside. Such a reliable vehicle but I needed to have taken a bit more care over the bumps etc.
A very good alternative to Fiesta or Polo and a lot cheaper than the Volkswagon.
Comfort and nice body excellence colour Months of wallanty fabulous.
Small family car but big enough for 4 adults comfortably 35pounds tax very good on petrol and cheaper to insure
