Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very rapid, both in a straight line and around bends | Not the best hot hatch in any one area |
| Keenly priced for a performance hatch | High-performance Michelin tyres will be expensive to replace |
| Lots of standard kit | Can't quite match the super-talented Honda Civic Type-R |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) was conceived to be a top-tier yet affordable hot hatch, successfully blending performance, grip, and handling with everyday usability. Launched in 2018, it quickly became a strong contender against rivals like the Ford Focus ST and Honda Civic Type R, often at a more accessible price point. A 2021 facelift brought subtle refinements, a power bump to 276bhp, and the option of a dual-clutch transmission, alongside a new Fastback bodystyle for added flair.
This i30 N excels as a versatile all-rounder, offering a practical interior with decent space for adults and a boot ranging from 381 to 436 litres. Despite a firm ride at low speeds, its meaty steering, limpet-like grip, and agility ensure serious fun on the road, while maintaining composure in varied conditions. Standard equipment is generous, including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and comprehensive safety features. Running costs are typical for a performance car, with real-world MPG around 30, and specialist tyres being a notable expense. Production of the petrol i30 N ceased in early 2024.
Best for: Drivers on a budget seeking a fun, well-equipped, and practical front-wheel-drive hot hatch with strong all-round performance.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the absolute most powerful, prestigious, or overtly engaging handling hot hatch, or those sensitive to a firm ride on broken urban roads.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) is a highly competitive and well-rounded contender in the hot hatch segment. While it may not claim to be the best in any single aspect like outright power or handling, its strength lies in its comprehensive performance across the board, impressive standard equipment, and relative affordability. It offers excellent value and a genuinely fun driving experience, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a practical yet thrilling car.

5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)The Hyundai i30n is a drivers car handles well and has the extra power if needed
I ve driven a 2018 6 speed manual, and tbh theres a lot going on whilst changing gear ⚙ hence Ive traded for the 2021 model with 8speed DCT (build in house by Hyundai) and if there giving you a track warranty they must be pretty sure it will take a hard time on track, although most will never see a track... If you want a bullet of a car, with power delivery that seems it will never run out, chose this, Id compare it with, golf gti, focus, St, with 280bhp I cant say focus RS as its 310bhp out the box, however Iam sure with some better cold ❄ air induction /larger intercooler, bigger injectors, re mapping , this car could be tuned upto and beyond 310bhp easy enough... Enjoy i30N Regards J. Herer
