Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very rapid, both in a straight line and around bends | Not the best hot hatch in any one area |
| Keenly priced for a performance hatch | High-performance Michelin tyres will be expensive to replace |
| Lots of standard kit | Can't quite match the super-talented Honda Civic Type-R |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) is Hyundai's first proper hot hatch, engineered to deliver genuine performance whilst remaining affordable compared to established rivals. The original 2018 model produced 271bhp, with a 2021 facelift introducing a sharper design, cabin refinements, and increased power to 276bhp. A sleek Fastback bodystyle was also added, offering a coupe-inspired alternative to the traditional hatchback. The i30N combines meaty steering, limpet-like grip, and impressive agility with everyday practicality, featuring a spacious interior, decent boot space (381-436 litres), and excellent standard equipment including keyless go, satnav, climate control, and smartphone integration.
Whilst the i30N doesn't lead in any single area, it performs strongly across the board with no glaring weaknesses. The 2.0-litre engine delivers strong performance throughout the rev range, though it's not the most characterful unit. A firm ride at low speeds can be draining on broken urban roads, but motorway cruising is relaxed. Running costs are reasonable for a hot hatch, with real-world fuel economy around 30mpg and insurance group 28. Hyundai discontinued the petrol i30N in early 2024 to focus on electric performance models. A 20,000-mile service interval and optional service plans help manage ownership costs.
Best for: Buyers seeking affordable hot hatch performance, those wanting strong all-round capability without premium pricing, and drivers who value standard equipment and practicality alongside performance.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the most powerful hot hatch (Honda Civic Type-R), the most prestigious badge (Volkswagen Golf GTI), or the most engaging handling (Ford Focus ST).
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i30 N | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 43.1% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Focus ST | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.9% | 4.4/5 |
| Honda Civic Type-R | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.3% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the i30 N if: You're seeking affordable hot hatch performance, want strong all-round capability without premium pricing, or value standard equipment and practicality alongside performance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the most powerful hot hatch, the most prestigious badge, or the most engaging handling dynamics.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i30 N is a well-rounded hot hatch that performs strongly across the board without glaring weaknesses. Whilst it doesn't lead in any single area—lacking the raw power of the Honda Civic Type-R, the prestige of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, or the engaging handling of the Ford Focus ST—it offers exceptional value for money and impressive standard equipment. The i30N feels engineered by a company with decades of performance experience, making it an essential consideration for front-wheel-drive hot hatch buyers seeking around 300bhp. Its affordability, practicality, and comprehensive kit list make it a compelling choice for those balancing performance with everyday usability.

5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)The Hyundai i30n is a drivers car handles well and has the extra power if needed
I ve driven a 2018 6 speed manual, and tbh theres a lot going on whilst changing gear ⚙ hence Ive traded for the 2021 model with 8speed DCT (build in house by Hyundai) and if there giving you a track warranty they must be pretty sure it will take a hard time on track, although most will never see a track... If you want a bullet of a car, with power delivery that seems it will never run out, chose this, Id compare it with, golf gti, focus, St, with 280bhp I cant say focus RS as its 310bhp out the box, however Iam sure with some better cold ❄ air induction /larger intercooler, bigger injectors, re mapping , this car could be tuned upto and beyond 310bhp easy enough... Enjoy i30N Regards J. Herer
