Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very rapid, both in a straight line and around bends | Not the best hot hatch in any one area |
| Keenly priced for a performance hatch | High-performance Michelin tyres will be expensive to replace |
| Lots of standard kit | Can't quite match the super-talented Honda Civic Type-R |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i30 N (2018-2024) was the brand's first serious hot hatch, engineered to offer top-tier performance at an affordable price. Available as a hatchback or a sleeker Fastback, it successfully challenged established rivals from Ford and Honda. A minor 2021 facelift brought subtle suspension tweaks, a slight power increase to 276bhp, and an optional dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Despite its success, Hyundai ceased production in early 2024 to focus on its electric performance 'N' models.
As a true hot hatch, the i30 N is a practical all-rounder, retaining much of the standard i30's usability. The interior is reasonably spacious, and it offers generous boot capacity (381 litres for the hatch, 436 for the Fastback), although a large strut brace can obstruct bulky items. It comes very well-equipped as standard, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, heated seats, and a reversing camera included. Running costs are typical for the class, with real-world economy around 30mpg, but the specially developed high-performance tyres are costly to replace.
Best for: Drivers who want a thrilling and capable hot hatch that's also practical, well-equipped, and represents great value for money.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the absolute pinnacle of handling (like a Honda Civic Type R), a more prestigious badge (like a VW Golf GTI), or those concerned about the cost of performance tyres.

The Verdict
You should buy the i30 N if: You want a thrilling and capable hot hatch that's also practical, well-equipped, and represents great value for money.
Consider alternatives if: You demand the most engaging handling possible, a more prestigious badge, or are wary of high running costs for performance tyres.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i30 N is a formidable competitor in the hot hatch segment. While it may not be the absolute best in any single discipline, it is a fantastic all-rounder with no significant flaws. Its blend of performance, practicality, standard equipment, and affordability makes it a compelling choice that feels like a product from a seasoned manufacturer, not a first attempt.

5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)The Hyundai i30n is a drivers car handles well and has the extra power if needed
I ve driven a 2018 6 speed manual, and tbh theres a lot going on whilst changing gear ⚙ hence Ive traded for the 2021 model with 8speed DCT (build in house by Hyundai) and if there giving you a track warranty they must be pretty sure it will take a hard time on track, although most will never see a track... If you want a bullet of a car, with power delivery that seems it will never run out, chose this, Id compare it with, golf gti, focus, St, with 280bhp I cant say focus RS as its 310bhp out the box, however Iam sure with some better cold ❄ air induction /larger intercooler, bigger injectors, re mapping , this car could be tuned upto and beyond 310bhp easy enough... Enjoy i30N Regards J. Herer
