The ix20 provides great cabin and boot space for a car of its size. It feels light and spacious and being able to set the boot base higher or lower provides a lot of extra space.

Hyundai ix20 (2010-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Low running costs | Bland to drive |
| Lots of standard equipment | No sliding rear doors |
| Solid reliability record | A Citroën C3 Picasso has more space |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai ix20 (2010-2019) is a practical and spacious mini MPV that punches well above its weight in terms of interior room. Based on a supermini platform, it offers the same footprint as a Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Polo, yet delivers surprising versatility with a tall, MPV-inspired body. With 440 litres of boot space and up to 1,486 litres with the rear seats folded, it rivals much larger vehicles. The driving position is excellent, with good visibility and adjustable seating, whilst passengers benefit from ample headroom and the ability to recline or slide rear seats for comfort or extra boot space.
Powered by 1.4 or 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, the ix20 prioritises comfort and practicality over driving excitement. The 1.4 diesel is the most economical, achieving 65.7mpg, whilst the 1.6 diesel offers 64.2mpg. Petrol options return around 50mpg for the 1.4-litre and 43.5mpg for the 1.6-litre. Insurance groups are reasonable (7-13 out of 50), and servicing is required every 10,000 miles with fixed-price plans available. Generous standard equipment across all trim levels, combined with a solid reliability record, makes the ix20 an excellent choice for families seeking space and value without compromise.
Best for: Families seeking maximum practicality and space, budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising comfort and equipment over driving dynamics, and users covering high annual mileage (diesel models).
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, those wanting sliding rear doors, buyers prioritising driving excitement, or those needing more space than a Citroën C3 Picasso offers.

| Citroën C3 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.1% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the ix20 if: You're seeking maximum practicality and space on a budget, prioritising comfort and equipment over driving dynamics, or covering high annual mileage with a diesel engine.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging handling, sliding rear doors, or require more space than a Citroën C3 Picasso offers.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai ix20 (2010-2019) is a strong contender in the mini MPV segment, offering excellent practicality, generous standard equipment, and low running costs. Whilst it lacks the engaging driving dynamics of the Ford B-Max and the sheer space of the Citroën C3 Picasso, it strikes an impressive balance between the two. The ix20's solid reliability record, affordable pricing, and comprehensive equipment levels make it an outstanding choice for families and budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-built vehicle that delivers genuine value as a used purchase.
