Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the very best EVs to drive | Disappointing real-world range |
| Combines speed with refinement | Doesn't charge as quickly as some rivals |
| Rock-bottom tax bills for company drivers | Firm ride on biggest wheels |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar I-Pace, launched in 2018, was the British brand's first pure electric vehicle, offering 396bhp and permanent four-wheel drive. It targets premium electric SUVs like the Audi E-tron and Tesla Model Y. While its official WLTP range is 292 miles, real-world driving typically yields around 240 miles in warm conditions, dropping to 180 miles on motorways or in colder weather. Charging from a 7kW home wall box takes about 14 hours, with rapid DC CCS charging adding 100 miles in 45-60 minutes (50kW) or 30 minutes (100kW).
The I-Pace truly excels in driving dynamics, delivering a playful and enthusiastic experience that makes it one of the best sports SUVs, electric or otherwise, with a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds. It's also refined and comfortable, though ride comfort can be firmer on larger wheels. Practicality is decent with a 577-litre boot and a 'frunk' for cables, accommodating two adults comfortably in the rear. Running costs are low thanks to competitive new pricing, cheaper home charging (9-13p per mile), free congestion zone entry, and no VED, with servicing every two years or 21,000 miles.
Best for: Drivers seeking a thrilling and luxurious electric sports-SUV, those who appreciate engaging driving dynamics, company drivers benefiting from low tax bills, and buyers looking for advanced tech and comfort.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum real-world range that closely matches official figures, those needing the fastest charging speeds available, or individuals sensitive to a firmer ride on larger wheels.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar I-Pace | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 37.4% |
| Audi E-tron | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.6% |
| Mercedes-Benz EQC | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 35.6% |
| Tesla Model X | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.7% |
The Verdict
You should buy the I-Pace if: You're looking for one of the best-driving electric SUVs, value its blend of speed and refinement, or benefit from low tax bills and congestion zone exemption.
Consider alternatives if: You need a real-world range closer to official figures, faster charging capabilities, or a consistently softer ride, especially on larger wheels.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) stands out as a milestone electric vehicle, offering an exceptionally thrilling and luxurious driving experience that often surpasses its petrol counterparts. While its real-world range and charging speeds might lag behind some newer rivals, its engaging dynamics, premium interior, and low running costs (especially for company car drivers) make it a highly desirable choice in the premium electric SUV segment. It offers a compelling alternative to the Audi E-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC, and a sportier, more driver-focused option compared to the Tesla Model X.

4.8 Overall rating
(7 reviews)Expensive car but an enjoyable one. Nice to drive, comfortable in the front but perhaps a bit lacking in legroom for the rear seat passengers. Considering the cost, the HSE model could come with more fittings as standard.
Awesome car. The prices of used need to drop a bit to make them more affordable.
Only had it for a day and so far so good. Looks impressive and great performance
I took a long time to decide on which EV car to buy and test drove quite a few including the Tesla. It came down to the i-pace as its a fantastic car to own and drive And its electric. Had a Ford Mach-E on order for nearly a year but somehow it just had to be the Jag.
Its a lovely car. Insurance is an issue being £500 plus more expensive than a diesel, wiping out the fuel saving. A power tailgate and glass roof are required items on the shopping list.
