Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the very best EVs to drive | Disappointing real-world range |
| Combines speed with refinement | Doesn't charge as quickly as some rivals |
| Rock-bottom tax bills for company drivers | Firm ride on biggest wheels |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) is the British brand's first pure electric vehicle and a milestone in automotive design. With 396bhp, permanent four-wheel drive, and a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds, it's one of the very best sports SUVs to drive, electric or otherwise. The official claimed driving range is 292 miles (WLTP), though real-world figures are more modest at around 240 miles in varied conditions and as low as 180 miles in cold weather or motorway driving. A full charge from a 7kW home wall box takes approximately 14 hours, whilst a 50kW rapid charger adds 100 miles in 45 minutes to an hour.
Practicality is adequate rather than exceptional, with a 577-litre boot and comfortable seating for two adults in the rear, though rivals like the Audi E-tron and Mercedes EQC offer more space. The I-Pace excels in driving dynamics, offering playful, enthusiastic responses and a refined, comfortable cruising experience. Three trim levels—S, SE, and HSE—are available, with SE offering the best value proposition. Running costs are competitive, with electricity at approximately 9-13p per mile from home charging, and the car benefits from zero Vehicle Excise Duty and exemption from premium car tax. Depreciation is reasonable, and servicing is required only every two years or 21,000 miles.
Best for: Drivers seeking an exhilarating electric sports SUV with premium refinement, company car users benefiting from tax advantages, and those prioritising driving dynamics over maximum practicality.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum real-world range, those dependent on rapid public charging networks, or those preferring a traditional SUV driving position and maximum rear passenger space.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar I-Pace | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 37.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Audi E-tron | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz EQC | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 38.9% | 4.4/5 |
| Tesla Model X | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 29.8% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the I-Pace if: You're seeking an exhilarating electric sports SUV with premium refinement, you're a company car user benefiting from tax advantages, or you prioritise driving dynamics over maximum practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum real-world range, depend on rapid public charging networks, or prefer a traditional SUV driving position and maximum rear passenger space.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) stands out as one of the finest electric sports SUVs available, offering superior driving dynamics compared to the Audi E-tron and Mercedes EQC. Whilst the Tesla Model X provides more space and the Mercedes EQC offers slightly better value, the I-Pace's combination of thrilling performance, refinement, and low running costs makes it an achingly desirable choice for those prioritising driving pleasure. Its real-world range falls short of official claims, and charging speeds lag behind some rivals, but these compromises are offset by its exceptional handling and premium feel. For used buyers, it represents a milestone electric vehicle that proves EVs needn't be mundane.

(7 reviews)Expensive car but an enjoyable one. Nice to drive, comfortable in the front but perhaps a bit lacking in legroom for the rear seat passengers. Considering the cost, the HSE model could come with more fittings as standard.
Awesome car. The prices of used need to drop a bit to make them more affordable.
Only had it for a day and so far so good. Looks impressive and great performance
I took a long time to decide on which EV car to buy and test drove quite a few including the Tesla. It came down to the i-pace as its a fantastic car to own and drive And its electric. Had a Ford Mach-E on order for nearly a year but somehow it just had to be the Jag.
Its a lovely car. Insurance is an issue being £500 plus more expensive than a diesel, wiping out the fuel saving. A power tailgate and glass roof are required items on the shopping list.
