Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
One of the very best EVs to drive	Disappointing real-world range
Combines speed with refinement	Doesn't charge as quickly as some rivals
Rock-bottom tax bills for company drivers	Firm ride on biggest wheels

Quick Summary

The Jaguar I-Pace is a milestone electric vehicle that proved EVs can be thrilling and desirable. Launched in 2018, this premium electric SUV combines 396bhp with permanent four-wheel drive, delivering exceptional driving dynamics that rival even petrol-powered sports cars. With an official WLTP range of 292 miles, real-world performance typically yields 180–250 miles depending on conditions and driving style. Charging from a 7kW home wall box takes around 14 hours, whilst 50kW rapid chargers add 100 miles in 45 minutes to an hour.

The I-Pace accelerates from 0–62mph in 4.8 seconds and offers a sublime driving experience whether commuting or tackling favourite roads. It's competitively priced against rivals like the Audi E-tron and Mercedes EQC, with running costs around 9–13p per mile on home electricity. Servicing is required every two years or 21,000 miles, with Jaguar charging £1,000 for three years' cover. Depreciation is reasonable, and as an electric vehicle, it qualifies for zero Vehicle Excise Duty and London congestion charge exemption. The SE trim offers the best value, whilst post-2021 facelift models feature the more intuitive Pivi Pro infotainment system.

Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, luxurious electric SUV with exceptional performance and low running costs, particularly company car users benefiting from tax advantages.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum real-world range, fastest charging speeds, or traditional SUV driving positions, or buyers concerned about firm ride quality on larger wheels.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the I-Pace if: You're seeking an engaging, luxurious electric SUV with exceptional performance and low running costs, particularly if you're a company car user benefiting from tax advantages.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum real-world range, fastest charging speeds, traditional SUV driving positions, or are concerned about firm ride quality on larger wheels.

Competitive Position: The Jaguar I-Pace is a standout in the premium electric SUV market, offering superior driving dynamics that surpass rivals like the Audi E-tron and Mercedes EQC. Whilst the Tesla Model X provides more space and the Mercedes EQC offers slightly better value, the I-Pace's thrilling performance, refinement, and tax efficiency make it an achingly desirable choice for drivers prioritising engagement and luxury. Its real-world range is competitive with peers, though charging speeds lag slightly behind some competitors. For those valuing driving pleasure alongside practicality, the I-Pace remains a milestone achievement in electric vehicle design.
