Jaguar XE (2015-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Brilliant handling	Electrical issues blight the Jag's reliability record
Sleek and sporting looks	Tight rear-seat space
Excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox	Small boot

Quick Summary

The Jaguar XE (2015-2024) is Jaguar's stylish and innovative entry into the compact executive saloon market, competing directly with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Constructed from bonded and riveted aluminium components, the XE features Jaguar's own Ingenium diesel and petrol engines, alongside comprehensive electronic driver assistance and convenience features. Its sleek, sporty design and refined handling make it a refreshing alternative to German rivals, though early models were plagued by electrical issues that have since been largely resolved through recalls.

The XE strikes an excellent balance between comfort and nimbleness, making it ideal for long-distance driving with minimal wind and road noise. Jaguar's turbodiesel engines deliver impressive economy, with the 161bhp unit achieving mid-60s mpg in real-world driving, whilst the more powerful 178bhp variant manages around 41mpg even when driven hard. The 2019 update introduced an improved infotainment system with satellite navigation, DAB radio, and smartphone integration. However, the car prioritises style over practicality, with a tight rear-seat space and the smallest boot in its class at 410 litres. Service costs vary significantly between dealers, though fixed-price maintenance plans are available.

Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, engaging compact executive saloon with excellent handling and a refreshing alternative to German marques, particularly those prioritising driving dynamics over rear-seat space.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring generous rear-seat legroom, a large boot, or an estate option, or those concerned about potential electrical reliability issues on earlier models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the XE if: You're seeking a stylish, engaging compact executive saloon with excellent handling and a refreshing alternative to German marques, particularly if driving dynamics are a priority.

Consider alternatives if: You require generous rear-seat legroom, a large boot, an estate option, or have concerns about potential electrical reliability issues on earlier models.

Competitive Position: The Jaguar XE (2015-2024) is a compelling alternative in the compact executive saloon segment, offering brilliant handling and sleek styling that rivals the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. Whilst the BMW edges ahead on overall ratings and the Audi boasts superior user satisfaction, the XE delivers comparable value and a more engaging driving experience than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. However, prospective buyers should verify that all recall work has been completed before purchase, as early models suffered from electrical issues. For those prioritising driving dynamics and style over practicality, the XE represents an excellent choice at a competitive price point.
