High spec , extremely comfortable, everything is where you would expect it to be, and it just reeks of class. Lots of goodies for the tech fans but all straight forward so no problem for those of us less genned up. Why oh why did it take Jaguar so long to see the market for estate cars?

Jaguar XF Mk1 (2007-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fabulous handling | Reliability might be a concern |
| Great interior | R-Sport models have a firm ride |
| Roomy as a saloon or an estate | No plug-in hybrid option |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XF Mk1 (2007-2015) is a sophisticated and attractive executive car that revolutionised Jaguar's image upon its arrival. With sharp styling, a chic and modern cabin, and a rear-wheel drive chassis that balances comfortable cruising with engaging back-road driving, the XF proved that excellence doesn't require clinical efficiency. The 2011 facelift refined the design further with slimmed headlights, a redesigned front bumper and grille, and improved interior equipment. A 500-litre boot accommodates executive needs, whilst the Sportbrake estate variant offers 550 litres, extending to 1,675 litres with rear seats folded.
The engine range is diverse, from economical 2.2-litre turbodiesels to powerful supercharged V8s, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The XF's handling is notably more agile than German rivals, with responsive steering and a well-judged ride. Whilst running costs are substantial—servicing averages £365–£475 annually, and rear brake pads require frequent replacement—the XF mk1 offers high standard equipment levels and exceptional driving engagement. Most examples were company purchases, meaning well-specified examples are readily available on the used market.
Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, characterful executive car with superior handling, those valuing style and interior quality, and enthusiasts who prioritise driving pleasure over clinical efficiency.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about running costs, those requiring maximum rear legroom, or drivers seeking the latest hybrid technology.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar XF | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW 5 Series | 5/5 | 3.7/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Audi A6 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 34.8% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XF if: You seek an engaging, characterful executive car with superior handling, value style and interior quality, or prioritise driving pleasure over clinical efficiency.
Consider alternatives if: You are concerned about running costs, require maximum rear legroom, or need the latest hybrid technology.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XF Mk1 stands apart from its German rivals through its engaging handling, distinctive character, and exceptional interior ambience. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz E-Class edges ahead on user ratings and the BMW 5 Series impresses with expert credentials, the XF offers a more rewarding driving experience and greater personality. Its diesel engines are reliable and economical, and high standard equipment levels mean well-specified examples represent excellent value. For drivers who value driving engagement and style over austere efficiency, the XF mk1 is a compelling choice in the executive saloon market.
