Customers say
The Jaguar XJ Series is celebrated for its luxurious interior, unique design, and impressive performance across model years. Owners consistently appreciate the quality and elegance that the vehicle offers, making it a standout option in the luxury car market. However, some drivers mention concerns over fuel economy and reliability, particularly with the diesel engine in older models. Overall, the XJ Series leaves a strong impression as a stylish and comfortable choice for those seeking a premium driving experience, although practical aspects like economy may not meet everyone's needs.

Yes it's good value for money i personally think 2009 what a good year for this jaguar model stand back and look at the lines on the jaguar the way it looks the way the rear quarter slops down the the rear of jaguar a beautiful car if you see this model and it's in great condition but it because once you've owned an xj jaguar you won't drive nothing else that's just my opinion but if you can afford it go for the xjr the sound they make is unbelievable

The features are very nice but I do prefer the earlier model that has both headlights the same size. I also prefer the headlights to be round & not oval

Jaguar XJ (2010-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sporty to drive for a luxury saloon | Compromised ride comfort |
| XJR is extremely fast | Low-quality finish in some parts of the cabin |
| Lots of luxury kit | Lacklustre infotainment system |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XJ (2010-2019), known as the X351, is a dramatically styled luxury saloon that marked a significant departure from its predecessor. Featuring a sleek, low roofline, aggressive styling, and a panoramic glass roof, the XJ combines contemporary design with traditional Jaguar character. Engine options range from a frugal 3.0-litre diesel V6 to a supercharged 5.0-litre petrol V8, all initially paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive versions also available. The interior exudes luxury with fine veneers, leathers, and metal finishes, delivering a more characterful cabin than rivals such as the BMW 7 Series.
The XJ's driving dynamics are particularly engaging for a luxury saloon, with slick, accurate steering and a composed, capable chassis making it a treat to drive—far more involving than competitors like the Audi A8. However, this sportiness comes at the cost of a slightly compromised ride, lacking the unruffled glide of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. A long wheelbase model offers an extra 120mm of rear legroom, whilst the 520-litre boot exceeds those of the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Running costs are manageable, with diesel variants achieving over 35mpg and service plans available from around £480 annually. The high-performance XJR, introduced in 2012, provides an extremely fast alternative for those seeking maximum performance.
Best for: Drivers seeking a sporty luxury saloon with character, those prioritising engaging driving dynamics, and buyers wanting a more evocative alternative to conventional German rivals.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising ultimate ride comfort, buyers requiring the latest infotainment technology, or those needing maximum rear headroom due to the low roofline.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar XJ | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 8.3% | 3.9/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | 4/5 | 4.9/5 | 30.2% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW 7 Series | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi A8 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.2% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XJ if: You're seeking a sporty luxury saloon with character, prioritising engaging driving dynamics, or wanting a more evocative alternative to conventional German rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise ultimate ride comfort, require the latest infotainment technology, or need maximum rear headroom due to the low roofline.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XJ (2010-2019) stands out in the luxury saloon market for its engaging driving dynamics and distinctive character, offering a more involving experience than rivals such as the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Whilst it may not match the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for ultimate comfort or offer the latest technology, the XJ provides a compelling alternative for those seeking a luxury saloon with genuine driving appeal. Its range of engines, from efficient diesels to the extremely fast XJR, caters to diverse buyer preferences. However, potential buyers should be aware of the compromised ride comfort, some interior quality inconsistencies, and limited rear headroom. For those valuing character and driving engagement alongside luxury, the XJ represents an excellent choice.
