Jaguar XJ (2010-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sporty to drive for a luxury saloon	Compromised ride comfort
XJR is extremely fast	Low-quality finish in some parts of the cabin
Lots of luxury kit	Lacklustre infotainment system

Quick Summary

The Jaguar XJ (2010-2019), known as the X351, is a dramatically styled luxury saloon that combines sleek, aggressive design with genuine driving engagement. This fourth-generation variant features a low roofline, panoramic glass roof, and a choice of engines ranging from a frugal 3.0-litre diesel V6 to a potent supercharged 5.0-litre petrol V8. All models come with rear-wheel drive as standard, though all-wheel drive versions are available. The cabin exudes character with fine veneers, leathers, and metal finishes that deliver a cosseting and charming atmosphere, far more evocative than many rivals.

The XJ's standout quality is its engaging driving dynamics. Even the entry-level diesel produces 275hp and 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds, whilst the supercharged V8 achieves 4.9 seconds. The slick steering and composed chassis make it a treat to drive—more engaging than the Audi A8—though the penalty is a slightly compromised ride compared to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. A long wheelbase model offers extra rear legroom, and the 520-litre boot exceeds rivals. Running costs are manageable, with diesel variants achieving 35mpg and service plans available from around £480 annually. The high-performance XJR variant provides an exciting alternative to a Porsche Panamera.

Best for: Drivers seeking a luxury saloon with genuine sporting credentials, those who value character and engagement over ultimate comfort, and buyers interested in the high-performance XJR variant.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum rear headroom, those seeking the ultimate in ride comfort, or those wanting cutting-edge infotainment technology.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the XJ if: You're seeking a luxury saloon with genuine sporting credentials, value character and engagement over ultimate comfort, or are interested in the high-performance XJR variant.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear headroom, seek the ultimate in ride comfort, or want cutting-edge infotainment technology.

Competitive Position: The Jaguar XJ (2010-2019) stands out as the most engaging luxury saloon in its class, offering a compelling alternative to rivals like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. Whilst it may not match the S-Class for ultimate comfort or the A8 for infotainment sophistication, the XJ's superior driving dynamics and evocative character make it an excellent choice for enthusiasts. The lower percentage of good deals suggests it's a more niche offering, but for those who value involvement and style alongside luxury, it represents a distinctive and rewarding proposition. The XJR variant even provides a credible alternative to a Porsche Panamera.
